    Default Laptop or Base unit?

    Ok's

I have a work laptop which is fine for internet but anything else is either blocked or removed off it which is fair enough.

So myself and the mrs are looking for a computer which we can use for both work (teachers), internet a bit of dvd crompressing to go on our ipods and really thats about it.

So question is laptop or base unit

Love the laptop as i can hide it away, base unit will have to go somewhere permantely however i seem to be finding far better specced base units.

    Opinions (budget is £300)

Pitty your not in the North West, I have a decent base unit going for £120, new twin hard drives, GENUINE (yes honestly its legit) windows, 1GB Ram, graphics card (256 I think) full software bundle - its a Fujitsu Scenic Pentium 4 2600 if anyones interested.

If I cant post this due to for sale rules someone PM me and ill ask a mod to delete. Ive never sold anything on here.

This is pretty good laptop spec - available in store to just pick up and go at the same price: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-3481.aspx

You could rip your DVDs and keep them on there to watch, or use something like handbrake to pop them on your ipod.

if you are likely to travel with your computer or take it places then get a laptop. If it's never going to leave the house, get a desktop. You'll get a better spec'd DT for the same price.

Only issue with that is Vista Basic, it really is basic. For example you cant play DVD films without decoder software - Vista Basic is a downgraded operating system when compared to Windows XP Pro. Good hardware spec, if you have access to some software it would be ok, Acer not always the best laptops.

As someone else commented, if you're not going to be taking it anywhere, stick to a desktop as they're much better value for money and easier/cheaper to repair should there ever be a fault.

Windows Vista is far from perfect, and XP is getting on a bit now.

If you're not in any desperate rush to have one now, it may be worth hanging on a few months. Windows 7 is due out in the Autumn, and will be bundled with new machines.

I had the same dillema mate and ended up opting for a well specced laptop. Great decision and will now never go back to a desktop.

Laptop only ever moves around the house but is so much more conveinient than a desktop and you can keep a close eye on the kiddies.

Mine has 4gb ddr2, 320gb hdd, 19" widescreen with blu-ray player, full hd 1080p, bluetooth, web cam etc. So my question would now be why would anyone want a desktop?

    Model - Acer 8920

    Hope this helps.

well I am lucky enough to have both, I use the desktop far more than the lappy & the lappy is better specced. desktop is easy to repair/upgrade & has a better screen. nice to put the lappy away (tidy) though. I work in IT & guess what, both run on XP, Vista is awful!
If you dont want to take up space get a lappy (& a spare usb drive for back-ups!) but be prepared to spend a bit of cash come upgrade time..
