Default How hot should I be running?

1.9 CDTI 150 and I noticed today on a 100 mile round trip on A and B class roads that the temperature gauge didnt go above 80. In fact it sat the whole time around 75. I thought this was pretty low cos it usually sits between 85 - 90. What could be causing it to suddenly sit so low on a spirited drive? Outside temp was 15 degrees C.

    80 ish is ideal
dont forget the gauge isnt dead accurate anyway

diesels dont run as hot as petrols either, worth bearing in mind.

Mine used to sit around 75-80 and I didn't think this was hot enough so I changed the thermostat and now it always heats up to 87 and sitting in traffic or driving it hard it increases. But when its warmed up it never goes below 87. The only downside of changing it was the cost. From memory it cost me around £48 as you have to buy the complete housing, as its all one piece.

My CDTI used to be pretty steady at 80ish but now its anywhere between 75 to 85. I think it maybe a time for a change of stat. Damm, I thought it was just a quick trip to halfrauds and a fiver but from above, apparently not. Is it an easy change (anyone) and do you have to drain the entire coolent system?
    thanks.

Just had my thermostat changed - was maxing at 78 on the motorway, but would go go 90 in town. Now sitting at 88 on the motorway and in town which is consitent and where it used to be when I first had the car.

(and the Collant temp doesn't report -20C anymore which is a bonus!)

Its a bit fiddly as there are lots of pipes connected in a small area. If your competent with a spanner then you should have no problems. I used about 2 bottles of coolant.
