    Default Dead Xbox?

    Gutted
Went to put the xbox on and there was no picture, but there was sound!

Checked and rechecked all the connections (HDTV switch etc), the tv settings, reset the xbox display settings with Y and pulling the right trigger, but still no display.

Had a look round the xbox forums and it doesn't look good. Some are suggesting removing the x-clamp and redoing the thermal paste inside! Some are suggesting cooking the xbox by wrapping towels around until it turns off by overheating. (Not sure how that fixes it).

Now its an old xbox360, bought Nov 2006, so I only have the MS av connection, no hdmi, so I'm limited in terms of ruling out the cable by buying a £20 MS cable. If MS want £60 (or however much it is arranged with them online) I've a feeling I'm better off just buying a new one?

Anyone else experienced the same or similar? Anyone sent their xbox off the MS?

    Any help appreciated

Youve got a 3yr warranty on it..

Phone Microsoft up, they will then email you some shipping labels... they will get it picked it.

You will then get it, or a re-conditioned one back in around 3-4 weeks.

Do you know anyone who could lend you their cable, just to rule that out - it may only be something simple.

No need to goto all that hassle of frying the 360's insides by doing the "towel trick" as that is known to cause more problems than just the RROD.. I'll PM you BoroDave..

I wouldn't recommend wrapping a towel around it just yet. My Xbox has been fine, but I've sent off two family ones, and Microsoft were brilliant about it.

The first one was an early 2006 model, and when it came back, they had replaced the entire innards, including a new DVD drive.

Before you completely 'brick' it, it may be worth contacting MS first - what's the worst that can happen. The Xbox undoubtedly has problems, but Microsoft have responded well to it.

I was actually given the original 2006 Xbox, as it wasn't wanted, and I have got HD from it by using the component cable that came with my new Xbox, so the cables are interchangeable. Do you have the original SCART cable that would have come with it, just to try it.

Maybe a good games shop would allow you to 'borrow' one on sale or return, or allow you to take the console into the shop to try it.

It's certainly worth trying, as you've got nothing to lose.

Sounds like the beginning to a Dr Pepper ad!

    Just to update you all:
Tried different cable - no different.
Tried the towel trick - fans turned off after about 40 minutes but no red rings. Left it overnight (on some marble away from stuff!) Following day tried different cable again. It worked.
Tried my original cable - it worked!
    Showed wife!
    Turned xbox off.
Turned it on - back to square one. Alternate cable - same story.
Showed wife - allowed to buy a new one!

Went to Tescos bought arcade with free banjo kazooie game, got clubcard points and 5p a litre off! £126 bar a few pennies.

Get home from work today to find a pm from Big Pete - ta fella - so I'm doing that, but also breaking up the additional parts and spares to ebay, new wireless controller, 256mb memory unit, power brick, component cable (new one is hdmi) banjo kazooie game lol

Cheers for all the suggestions, you're a helpful bunch!
    G
