Thumbs up Thinking of buying a 3.0 CDTI auto elite estate - your thoughts please

Firstly hello. I have become a member since I am looking to buy a vectra C.

The title says it all really, but I would like some honest opinions. I am looking for a facelift model and really need to know any pitfalls or areas that I should be paying attention to when buying. What sort of price should I be looking to pay for a them etc etc. It is to replace a 1.8 Astra G SRi which is the other halfs.

    Thanks in advance

I have a 2003 SRI 3.0 CDTI Auto, it has been really great car until it turned 100k, then had a few engine trouble and ESP problems, Auto box seems bullet proof though. Best advice would be to buy one with as low as mileage as possible. I will definatley be having another one!

    Go the VX website
Look at what trade-in prices are
Then go to Network Q and see what is available

Sadly 3.0 V6 CDTI models are rare
Prices should be depressed as it was not a very attractive company car due to the high tax level and relatively mow MPG, but the engines are bomb-proof (compared to the 1.9 CDTI)
For those reasons prices are typically 5-10% above those for a 1.9 CDTI

    Check service history
With the key out of the ignition, press the mileomter and see what happens
If a spanner and number appears, then the car is on ECOFlex servicing, and this is the mileage TO next service
Depending on year, it will be either 20K or 30K mile service intervals
Check that against the service book

    Check front and rear brakes
    Check all tyres
Front brake pads last about 25K miles, you can get three sets of pads to discs, but only just!
Rear brake pads and discs last about 30K miles, for this reason there is no point replacing just the pads as the discs won't be far behind

Run the engine for about 5 minutes, or until the temperature needle moves, then switch off
    Check the oil level
The oil should be almost like water, VERY runny

General electrical gremlins, pretty much the same as any other Vectra C, such as SAS (steering angle) or CIM module failure

The only problem I had with the engine was very minor oil leak, the sump seal had failed just a few days after the second service

    Finally, tyres
Would have been supplied on 215/50R17 95W
As an estate it MUST have XL rated tyres
The alternative is 225/45R17 94W, which is what most people swap to
If it still has the Good Year NCT5 then check the country of manufacture, if German then OK, anything then advise the salesperson they need to be replaced and check recalls
Front tyres last about 20K miles, when swapped rear to front as they wear
You can get a set of rear tyres to last 50K miles, but they will suffer from tramlining and all the associated problems with that (hence the advice, swap rear to front as they wear) due to the chassis design

The 2.0T is a good engine, if you're open to suggestions or you're struggling to find the car you want as a 3.0CDTi.

In my opinion, is by far the best Vectra-C engine overall. Seems to have fewer problems than some others, more than enough power as standard, but is very tuneable for those wanting more. Fuel economy is close to the 2.2 (petrol), but obviously is not good compared to the diesels.
