was thinking of a flat panel K&N but interested to find out what the mod on the standard box before i buy anything.

dead easy mate whip the top off the box at the bottom you will see the inlet partly restricted by a palte just give it a sharp tug and throw it away bob it back together and enjoy
what this just lets more air in then?
why do they fit it if it works better without it?
does it damage the car?
a couple of people on this forum with 1.8vvt's have said the air box mod has reduced their mpg by 5-6mpg so they've put the little plastic thing back in the air box.
I was going to do mine but i'd rather keep the engine running as high mpg as possible, considering the air box mod doesn't make that much difference to the power (from what i've heard)
all done for noise control etc make it as quiet as possible yes it increases airflow no it wont damage your car if you look at an original airfilter without the mod only half the filter is dirty thats how restricted the intake system is
No it wont damage it every one on here has done it including myself 4 yrs ago. Yes it lets more air in and allows better breathing. If you look at your old air filter it will be only dirty on half the filter. Not 100 % weather you gain any more power but it does feel like it revs easier. Easy enough job to do.
mines the 1.8vvt think anyone saying reduced mpg is just driving harder due to the fact engine is more responsive
due to driving wagons for a living i use SAFED driving techniques anyway and mixed use i get 38-42mpg on petrol and 34-38mpg on LPG on a good run i get 46-50mpg on Gas and that doing the maths not trusting the display
Just done the mod on my 1.8, removed the plastic tube before I bought a K&N filter. The mod helped get rid of the flat spots I had on the car and so far not increased the mpg and is using the original air filter. Am going to put the short intake pipe on next before I decide to get a K&N. I would suggest u do the mod first before laying out for the K&N
cheers guys i will look under the bonnet tomorrow it raining again at the moment!
The mod increases air flow into the engine, and is believed to smooth out and even increase power delivery. I did it on my 2.0T and it did make a difference. It's so easy to do even a cack-handed individual like me can do it.
