    Default Tyre Decision......

I've been running Goodyear Excellence 215/50 R17's on the front of my 150 CDTI for about 21k miles now and I reckon that they have about 2 - 3k miles left.

On the rears are the Old Eagle NCT5's, which have never been on the front and are currently on about 5mm of tread.

    Should I:

    a) Keep them as they are and then swap the fronts to 225/45 R17's (cant afford more than £80 ish per tyre), so reccomendations please.

    b) Rotate the back tyres to the front to maximise the life of the Excellence tyres to try and save a few quid for a few months

    Your thoughts please......

Buy 4 tyres from me for £120

Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?

I started this thread about rotating tyres front to rear. It might be worth you having a read http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85407. I am running Falken 912s 225/45/17 at the moment. Good grip in wet and dry, good wear and quiet. They are very harsh though and in a few months when they are worn I'm going for Kumho Ecsta Sports ( quite few people on here like these) but in the original size of 215/50/17. My local tyre bloke can supply and fit for £73 each. Hope this helps

Didn't like the Kumho Ecsta on mine. I found the grip in the wet didn't inspire confidence. The 'budget ' tyre of choice for me is the Barum (made by Continental).

Funnily enough, I've just replaced the original NCT's that were still on the back of my car today with a pair of 215/50 R17Barums - £60 each fitted. I've moved the older Barum's from the front onto the back. I prefer to change 2 at a time, rather than let all 4 get really low and have to fork out for a full set.

My personal experience with these tyres has been very good. In the dry they're excellent and much better in the wet than I expected from a tyre of this price - average wear rate too.

    Hope this helps.

I'd do that ^ and see what the local garages could fit in that size (as IME, it's cheaper to get 225/45's than it is for the equivalent 215/50's) for around the £80-mark

You should be able to find something decent. I think I got Yokohamas of some description on my Vectra when I had it, and they were around that price figure - they lasted something like 16,000-18,000 miles on the front, which is the most I've ever got out of a pair of front tyres on any car I've ever owned

Thanks for the replies guys - will do some shopping to see what I can get for what sort of price.

Fronts have covered about 21k miles and have about 3mm left on them. Dont like to run below 2mm before changing a tyre. After all, its all that is keeping you on the tarmac!
