    Default 1.9CDTi 150: Turbo Timers

    Hey Folks,

Getting a tad cheesed off at having to sit in the car for a min or 2, when letting the turbo cool down.

Has anyone, or does anyone know if it's possible to fit a turbo timer?
If so what kind of price am I looking at, and how easy is it to do?

It would make life a lot easier, rather than sitting there like a lemon with the engine running!

    Cheers

Do you need to wait a minute?
I idle the motor and listen for the turbo to wind down.
But, as I reverse into the drive its gone off boost anyway I guess...

i didn't think you needed to do that with a turbo diesel, with them only being a low blow turbo? i'm probably wrong tho....

I just switched off the engine straight away, no waiting and I never had any issue's in 40k miles. I dont think it makes any diffence.

you wont find any one to do a turbo timer on a cdti mate as the canbus system is to complex, i have made numerous calls and no one will touch them, just ease of boost when you round the corner from where your going,

If you paste the car and then just switch it off, then yes eventually your turbo will suffer. But in every day usage, you can just switch it off.

I have never had a turbo fault in 5 years and 200,000 miles of CDTi ownership.

    Thanks for the advice.

Normally i dont thrash it, but i give it a quick 2nd/3rd gear sprint once a day to loosen it up. Not to the extreme, then i just drive normally afterwards.

I normally get it up the path and leave it to tick over for a min, as we all know, the worst thing you can do, is have been flying around then just switch off, does a turbo no good.

My suspiscions over turbo timer + canbus have been proven then. Well i think i'll carry on as i am, but if i ahvent throttled it at all, just switch off as normal.

    Thakns guys

    Couple of things...

With the boost that the CDTI's run - a Turbo Timer is wasted TBH. They dont get anywhere near hot enough to cause any immediate damage even on a fast sprint. On my Saab 9K however running 360 BHP - you did have to let it idle for a min or 2 after a fast run immediatly before pulling up to the drive as the Turbo was cherry red at extreme drives - just doesnt happen on the CDTI's

Its actually ilegial. You are not 'supposed' to leave the car running not in it.. Very unlikley to be nicked or anything for it - but a point to note - it actually said so in the book that came with my Turbo Timer that i fitted on the 9k..

Rule of thumb for any turbo as Chris says - on the last minute of your drive home (or to where ever you are going) just drive normally... Not at high revs etc - just normal... Then you just pull up and turn off no issues..

NEVER rev the car and turn off as the revs are off idle... What this will do is stop the oil supply to the bearings of the Turbo - but the turbo can still be spinning from the revs.. ALWAYS turn off once the revs have settled at idle for a few secs to ensure that the turbo is still..

    HTH

I'm of the opinion - as long as the car is standard, and you get it serviced right and drive sensibly, don't worry about it. Turn it off right away - you may even be doing more harm than good by leaving the thing idling for long periods.
Mine always gets switched off immediately.
