Just fitted an irmscher grill today, when i removed the old grill there was a piece of plastic around the air inlet pipe held on by the top 3 screws, anyone know what this is for and do i need to replace it??? Car is an 05 cdti Sri 150

replace it mate. its to stop water splashing up and getting sucked into the engine. not needed on a petrol but on the diesel gotta keep it
Yep as he said. It must be replaced like for like. If not fitted, there is a chance in very heavy rain that water could be sucked into the diesel engine cylinders and hydraulic lock can occur. In short, if this happens, your engine could/will seize solid in an instant.
I removed mine, the air box has a drain in it anyway. Just binned it when I changed it over. Been that way for 38k now!
Was going to ask the same question, surely this piece of plastic is restricting the airflow, so removing it surely increases the air through the pipe to filter, have done the airbox mod with K&N on mine and noticed a big difference, surely this will increase the air more if not put back???
