Slight whining from the engine area...

not sure if i've always had this (only had the car a few weeks but dont remember hearing this when i bought it) but when the car is stationary / idle there is a slight whining noise which increases up to 1k revs then seems to disappear - probably under the noise of the engine. The last noise i had like this was with a rover and soon after i had to replace the gearbox n clutch and worried it may be something to do with the autobox.....?

Everything seems fine in the drive, gear change is still smooth, no slippage and no other knocks or rattles. Probably being a bit paranoid but dont want to take it to a $tealers for them to charge me for half hours labour to tell me i'm being daft and there's nowt wrong.

Anyone else with a 2.8t elite have the same noise???? Am i paranoid?

I had this on my Vec B. It's the Aux belt.

The whining noise in my Vec comes from the passenger seat. Make the missus catch the bus ;^)

not turbo whine?

do you have a panel filter or sports filter fitted ??

Thanks for the reply's lads. I do understand it could literally be anything but was hoping others may have had a similar issue (if it is an issue)

Can't be the turbo as can hear it when its stationary / idle.

Not sure what filter is fitted, guessing whatever is standard on the 2.8T Elite's.....

Celes, is there a simple way to check the aux belt, baring in mind i'm no mechanic but capable if pointed in the right direction.

so, popped the bonnet to see if i could get more of an insight as to where the noise was coming from. As far as i can tell its from the mid section of the engine bay - under the cover. What i did notice was that the noise pitch changed when i put a full wheel lock on - power steering issue? Pully? Coincidence? The noise did get louder the more i revved but gets drowned out by the engine itself after about 1500rpm.

gonna see if i can get it into a $tealers this weekend for someone to have a look cos something ain't right.....

Just to improve my day further, noticed that now I've got a vibration when running at about 1200rpm in second but mainly third. Related? Gearbox? Popping to dealer tomorrow to get their opinion
