    Default Limp mode, Emissions Light and poor performance

    Hi I need help

    Ive got an 04 1.9cdti 150 (92k miles)

    Recently it started going into limp mode - it was fine after restarting

    Then i got the Emissions light come on for two days only to disappear

    I have notice performance is poor sometimes between 1000 and 2000 but then it can be ok for days

    Occasionally the radio switches to cd player all by itself

    are these problems related or could they all be individual faults?

    its now in a local garage where they are trying to diagnose the fault codes - it apparently has 2 - one of which is ABS related

    update --------->

    they think it is the swirl chambers? i presume they mean the swirl valves which by reading this board is at least £600 - anyone had it done cheaper ---please !!

    update 2 -------------------> apparently the swirl flaps were ok, but completely gunked up - they removed and cleaned ---- cost nearly £300

    i picked it up last night, and it was unbelievably quiet -- acceleration was good and no warning lights.

    this morning the emissions light was back on and i lost power on the motorway (but without the spanner warning light coming on) had to crawl 40 miles home at 2000 rpm and maximum 50 mph !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    when the ignition is restarted the emissions light stays on but acceleration is better (but nowhere near good) and at least it goes past 2000 rpm BUT after a little while it dies again back to 2000 rpm max.

    it almost feels as if it is not running on all cylinders or the turbo isnt coming in ---- very similar to limp mode but without the warning light !!!!!!!!!!!!


    the bl00dy thing is back in the garage

    any ideas?????????????

    this might be a shot in the dark.

    my friend had a similar issue, his car went into limp mode and not going over 2000 RPM.

    he spent £250 at a garage to find out that his air filter was partly block and not letting enougth air in. so the MAF put it into limp mode with engine warning light lit.

    --------------> UPDATE

    ok egr needed replacing --- another £120, got the garage to take it for an extended test drive (60 miles or so) and they said everything was fine.

    i got it back yesterday afternoon and drove it for another hour or so and it was running like new - no lights, no power loss great acceleration.

    BUT got in the car this morning and 100 yards down the road the ****ing spanner light comes on AGAIN. so i restart the car - no spanner light but i then lose power again (no warning lights).

    restarted the car a couple of times and it was better but nowhere near as smooth or powerful as when i collected it from the garage!!!!!!!!!!!!

    does anyone know if this could also be an injector 3 problem?

    i love my vectra but these KNOWN design faults are doing my head in !!! i used to have an old passat estate that i bought for £500 with 180k miles on and all it needed in three years was an oil change and a distributor cap !!!!

    all of this is putting me off ever getting another vx

    -------------> UPDATE

    ok i checked and cleaned air filter - no problems apart from a small hose at the bottom right of the airbox wasnt attached. (dont know what this does but it is fitted back onto the airbox now)

    disconnected battery for 30 mins.

    took for a test drive - brilliant for 8 miles then limp mode again (cleared after engine restart only to come back later)

    so far

    inlet manifold (swirl valves) cleaned by garage
    new egr valve
    checked airfilter

    does anyone have any more ideas?


    i am tending to think that because its a problem that comes and goes it probably a sensor fault or could it be the wiring to injector 3?

    aye the garage didnt give me the codes but they said they came back relating to the inlet manifold and then the egr valve - they are a pretty honest bunch to be honest.

    anyway this morning i gave the number 3 injector connector and the plug that goes into the airbox a good dose of wd40

    result was doing over 300 miles today, no fault lights, no limp mode and pretty smooth power (a little weak low end - although i have also reversed the air box mod in case its that) the performance also appeared to improve as the miles racked up.

    in my uninformed opinion this points to the fault being with the number 3 injector connection or the sensor in the airbox or both.

    what do you think?

    hi mate did you sort it out? as mine went into limp mode today. last time it happened it was my rubber pipe from the intercooler into the EGR valve which spilt but dunno this time

    sorry for the late reply ive been working away a lot, anyway this is so far

    got the number 3 connector done > definitely smoother

    im over 100k now and the limp mode problem has come back - goes after restart...........also it doesnt accelerate well on inclines.

    and i started losing coolant - put it in for a pressure check (nothing visible) and there wasnt a problem with falling pressure

    500 miles later and the coolant light is back on with the spanner light !!!

    it took me 2.5 litres of coolant to get back (40 miles)

    result is the radiator has gone !!!!

    ive also got them checking hoses for leakes to solve the limp problem
