Default Which 6cylinder diesel to buy next?

I'm in a dillema here. A month or so ago I almost bought a C 3.0CDTi Auto, but decided not to as it sat at that dealer for over a year and it still is...

My Siggy V6 is nearing its death I think so I want to get rid of it ASAP. I don't know if I would buy another V6 CDTi...The facelift Z30DT is dear to insure and I don't know if the cylinder liner problems have been solved...

I am now looking at BMW's and Audi's. Is the 3.0d from BMW any good? Is the 2.5TDI from Audi bad? Might buy an SRi V6CDTi, but that would have to be a bargain with all the toys!

Had looked at these, but I was warned the some of beemer engines have the swirl valve issues that the CDTI 150 has so personally I would give that one a wide berth. The 2.5TDI is a good unit with 190PS i believe and also there is a the possiblity of gettign that engine with 4WD.

What about some of the 320 CDI mercs - ok a bit pricey but a 4 year old one is not to be sniffed at plus the are pretty bullet proof.

Sounds like your Signum V6 CDTI has just been a bad apple

My Vectra C SRI V6 CDTI has been more reliable than my last Vectra B SRI 2.0, and has now sailed past 85K miles with far less trouble

However, I only ever buy cars that have not yet needed a first service or are just about it due it
That way the service history can be completely blank / empty and I have nothing to worry about, just loads of warranty cover to take me up to 35K miles a year

Swirl flaps Thanks, I didn't know that.
I heard quite the opposite about the 2.5V6TDi. The earlier models had huge problems with camshaft wear... Even the later ones aren't completly sound either. The 164PS model is apparently the best compromise between reliability and power. The 180PS is good only from model year 2003 and on.

I'm still young...Mercs are for old people

Anybody here had either an Audi 2.5TDI or BMW 3.0d?

the Volvo D5 puts out 180 bhp - get a white Volvo and watch everyone slow down when they see you coming.

I want a Scirocco GT with the 170 bhp diesel. With leather and a few toys will be list price of about £23,000. Im only about 8K short if we can arrange some kind of whip round ?

The police over here uses Focuses and Skoda's...and a new Vec OPC

I actually wouldn't mind a Volvo D5 I have driven the XC70 D5 Auto (same autobox as our 2.2DTi ) and it was like a boat on the motorway...not good.

I had a go in a Scirocco once. It was only a 1.4TSI 160 but my god it gripped and gripped and gripped...stunning chassis.

Right on!! - Couldn't agree more.
Also have you looked at any recent Merc trim? Tacky compared with BMW. And the seats!!!

Drove a (remapped) BMW530D for several years until last year and around 100k miles. Wonderful smooth torquey motor and handling and balance like no FWD could ever achieve. You won't be disappointed mechanically or handling.

The main weaknesses are the electrics (complicated naturally) and the front suspension which is quite easy to damage, wears quite quickly and costs lots and takes lots of skill to fix. If you are roadtesting check for any signs of shimmy at any speed at all - this is a certain sign that bills are coming.

Reliability-wise I had the following in about 5 years:
Front wheel bearings (they come as complete hubs so a little pricey).
    Broken rear spring.
Several miscellaneous front and rear bushes.
    Both cam and crank sensors.
Plus normal servicing costs (roughly annual or around 15k miles).

So not too bad over 100k miles. Servicing at the $tealer is eye-watering but you can usually find a good ex-BMW independent somewhere around.

    Good luck!

157K miles gives no indication as to the condition of the engine
Remember diesel oil is a lubricant, and with good servicing a diesel engine can out last a petrol engine by up to double
However, a petrol engine can now easily last up to 150K miles, whereas 10 years ago you might have struggled to get 100K miles out of one

My Vectra B SRi 2.0 had its cylinder head skimmed at about 4 years / 90K miles, and I finally disposed of it a year later on 120K miles
Previous to that I had a diesel Rover and it its engine lasted to 6 years / 140K miles

However, the Mondeo I had from 2004 to 2006 lasted to 3 years and 110K miles, not even making it to its first MoT (although I was doing a monster annual mileage at the time!)

I do hear of people getting 200K miles out of their car, but I do wonder what the repair bills are like!
For that reason I usually keep my car for one year after the warranty has expired then dispose of it and let someone else take the risk...

Thing is that almost everybody in Germany drives the 3.0CDTi flatout on the autobahn. This engine just isn't made for this sort of thing...and that's why they don't believe mine is still all original

200k miles is not much for a car. My friend's father has a 730d with over 200k and is still going strong

That's why we are planning to sell our 2.2DTi auto after the warranty on the gearbox will expire.
