Default Help - New Discs / Pads and a coil spring!

    Hi all,

Have a Signum 2.0T 04 plate and had a warning light on.

Visit to Kwik-Fit (Boo Hiss) for a free brake check was done and actually they were very helpful. They say i need:

2 new front discs + pads
    Rear pads
and the NSF coil spring is broken.

So not wanting to pay kwikfit £350 to put standard stuff on, I thought about mods.

    1. Do i need to repace all 4 discs at the same time if i want to go to from 302 to 314s (and should I bother) or can i do front pair then the rear at another time? What is the common approach here ? and if I buy te kit from LMF do i get the discs grooved? If the 302s are fine is there a top notch pad brand I should get ?

Is it fair to assume the front brakes work much harder than the rears?

    2. In replacing the coild spring, should i take the opportunity to buy 4 and lower the car. Its an Elite, so wallows alot. Will this make a big difference or do i need to do the shocks too?

If so is the Supersport Sprint Suspension Kit from LMF any good £275 and will 35mm lower at front 25mm at rear do the trick handling wise?

I guess I will also need a garage who can do the work or a pukka mobile mechanic in south birmingham.

    Thanks alot guys and girls.

Answer to quetsion 1 - i'd replace with the 314 setup if you have the funds, alot better than the 302's and just replace the rear pads with the standard one's,drilled or grooved its upto you and depends on budget.

Answer to question 2 - Buy a full set,it'll work out cheaper but yours being an elite you'll have to change the shocks if you decide to lower it more than 30mm,the kit from LMF is good value for money but if you wanted the best go for Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks.

    Hope that helps.........

    Glenboy,

Do you mean just replace the front pair wit 314mm discs or all 4?

    Cheers

The Vectras/Signums that come with the 314mm front brakes as standard from the factory (i.e. the V6 models) have the same size rear brakes as you currently have (292mm disks), so if you upgraded to 314's from your 302's, no need to upgrade the rears as well.

If you buy the 314 brake kit from LMF, you get the standard GM disks - vented but not grooved or drilled. However, LMF have been out of stock for a while now, so you may have trouble finding the parts.

The 302mm brakes are fairly good - especially if your car has the standard 175bhp; they are much better than the 285mm disks that all other 4 cylinder Vectras/Signums come with. EBC green stuff are supposed to be excellent quality pads, so might be worth trying them out.

70% of the braking effort of the car is provided by the fronts, although on Vectras/Signums the rear pads sometimes wear out faster, due to the handbrake mechanism.
