Default difficult to start in the morning

hi yet another problem with my vectra 2.0 dti 52 plate. Car starts first turn of the key in the morning, then dies after about 10 seconds. when you try and restart it take about a minute to minute and a half of constant cranking to get the engine to start it sounds fuel related as if there was enough fuel to start it left in the filter or where ever then it has to pumped back from the tank. but i,m not a mechanic so not sure. car runs and starts fine all day. it only happens overnight. cheers for any ideas

Sounds like fuel could be draining back towards the fuel tank after it has been left standing fora while. You cars starts on the fuel that is in the pump then stops when this runs out and you have to crank it to suck some fuel back through. These cars have no one-way valve to stop this happening. Also bear in mind that the DTi fuel pump is succeptible to damage if cranked a lot without any fuel in it.

Can you leave the car facing nose-down overnight to see if this helps? It will stop the fuel heading back to the tank due to gravity.

If this does help or if you can't do it, check your fuel leak-off pipes and T-pieces - these can be found easily at the front of the engine if you remove the plastic cover - there is 1 for each cylinder and one going into the fuel pump.

If these are split or cracked, they let air in and so allow the fuel to run back towards the tank. Also check the various joins in the fuel pipes that run around the bonnet are OK and that the top of the fuel filter is screwed on properly.

Be careful because i was had a 2.0DI and exactly the same problem - i ran for at least a week turning over in the mornings, before the garage finally fixed it (i was told by a friend to check the fuel filter head which had gone pourous)

The fuel pump failed within a few days of having the problem fixed and i had to scrap the car

Yes, the pumps can cause problems on the DTi's. Also - unlike the newer CDTi engines - there's also no electric fuel pump in the tank which makes things worse - the high pressure pump has to draw the diesel right from the tank, and priming after a fuel filter change can be tricky.

just to let you guys know if you have a similar problem it was faulty fuel filter seals. i also spoke to a technician from vauxhall who was very knowledgeable. he claims that the fuel pump would not be damaged starting the car in the morning. would only burn out the starter motor. and a lot of people end up scrapping their car or changing fuel pump. when there is actually nothing wrong with it, just being wrongly diagnosed.
