    Default astra 120 engine spec

    this is strange

thinking about getting a astra sport hatch- 2nd hand

the 120 cdti are cheapish- the 150 cdti are dear

The ltd edition 888 astras tuned to 200bhp apparently start off as 16 valve 120 bhp cars- the only difference between the 120 and 150 astras is the engine management apparently

But when i look at the Vx brochure, and speak to vauxhall, they say the 2 astra engines are different, 120 is 8 valve, 150 is 16 valve, (in other words, same as the vectra)

Anyone know-wouldnt like to buy a 120 astra and find it was a 8 valve

The Astra engines are the same as the Vectras as far as I a can read. The 120bhp is an 8 valve engine (denoted by all silver letters on rear of car spelling CDTI) whereas the 150 bhp is a 16 valve engine and significantly more advance (denoted by the CD letters in silver and the Ti letters in red).
An 8 valve will only reach around 150bhp whereas the 16 valve can exceed 200bhp.
    Hope this helps

As you say Mike, the Astra engines 120bhp were 16v originally. Then they are now 8v.

Pop the bonnet, if the oil cap is on the right hand side of the engine block, it is 16v. If it is at the bottom (Front) of the engine block then it is a 8v. Pop off the engine cover and you will see the casting has 1 hump or 2. 1 hump is 8v, 2 humps is 16v.

My 55 plate 120 has a 16V engine, so you can pick them up pretty new. Thurlby/888 are still ordering them from the factory, so maybe they've not gone over to the 8V engine just yet?

    Here's what's under me hood!

I was under the impression that, initially the 120bhp engine was an 8 valve, but Vx has now made it a 16 valve.

I think it's the other way around, but I've never seen an 8V one yet. Probably because nearly everyone gets the 150!

I've seen loads of 8 valve Vec C 1.9 CDTi 120's, but only on pre 2005 cars.

    It used to be

    Vec 120=8V
    Vec 150=16V
    Astra 120=16V
    Astra 150=16V

There was a rumour that the Vec 120 would become a 16V, but they went the other way and made the Astra 120 an 8V.
