Default Just a thought tomtom satnav

    Hi guys,

After giving up my baby (2.0 20v fiat coupe) for a bigger car for the kids, i picked up my vectra sri 55 plate the other day.

And I am impressed lovely drive, now this got me thinking its got a cd30 installed would love to fit satnav unit but funds are limited at the moment.

But I do have a tomtom 520 now it looks like the screen is the same size as the display in the vectra. I was thinking maybe of removing the screen and wiring the tomtom in behind the dash.

Anyone tried this or thought about it, gonna give it a try as soon as i get 5 mins.

You would loose the info screen, if it was me i would stick it to the windsreen and be done with it, also more secure as you can remove at night!

As stated above you would lose the info display for your head-unit, unless you buy a single din head unit and facia conversion plate...or an aftermarket double din stereo.... you will then need to look at the how 2 section for a fitting a cheap (£70 I think) screen....there is another person on here looking to go from single din head unit back to OEM double din unit...maybe you could buy his stereo (blaupunkt) and conversion surround / facia plate.

Hi guys thanks for the replys, the stereo is not too much of a problem, what I was thinking was removing the indash info display and replacing it with the tomtom satnav.

So to look at it, it would look normal from front untill turned on then it would be a tomtom.

I understand I would lose all info such as MPG, Stopwatch etc.

I suppose it would probably be easier to just stick it to the windscreen.....lol

Just a thought I had when tinkering earlier

But all the radio info is on the screen too so it would be a bit hit-and-miss without the screen - if it would actually work without it.

If the screen is not in place, it will not power up properly...

That is why the other thread bogged about dismantling screens etc...the screen carries all the can-bus info (green and white wires) of which only one pair of these 6 or 7 wires are linked to the head-unit.

I have seen someone remove an air vent and fit in the gap.

Typically I can't find the thread now so I am unsure of the model but he lost the vent drivers side and fabricated something up to house the tomtom, it looked very good and easy to do.
