A hole in exhaust or leaking manifold maybe.
yes i can tell you prob 100%, you mostly get this at stand still,at start up, and when you stop/start, if so unfortunately your swirl flap inlet manifold is shot!, fumes are passing the part you can see moving when revved up, take your engine cover off and look to the top rear and look at the oily gunged area!! your rod may be in place and working but the fumes pass and get sucked in through the heater, a good test is to press your recirc button and run around with it like that and if you get no smell it will most likely be that and you will either have to get it done or like i do press the button as and when.
is this common at only 27000 miles
and is it an expensive repair
at low mileage, no i dont think so, have a look at your manifold its a two minuite job, come back and give feed back as to how it is!

it does sound unusuall i would have thought at 27k, could be fumes from egr gasket or simular, wouldnt have thought exhaust at that mileage.have you looked yet??
is this my problem
just a little further backwards/towards the windscreen you will see a bar connected to four round discs.
