    Default Cooling system performance problem

    Cooling system performance fault
    Hi guys

I have aproblem with my 2.0dti vectra c. The dreaded fault warning light (car and spanner) started appearing intermitently. I only noticed it when the car was up to full temp when it would come on for seconds at a time especially with throttle use.

I had the codes read and got p1483-4. I believe this refers to a cooling system fault, possibly over current fault. I suspect that after the car heats up and the thermostat opens etc, that the electric fans try to switch on albeit at low speed. It is then that the system sees an over current fault and throws the spanner. The car drives fine with no drop in power and the temp varies from 80 to 85 approx on the guage.

Over the last few days the light has decided to stay on all the time. I now hear a rapid clicking that sounds that it's coming from behind the clock display (I don't think it is). The clicking last for about 3 - 5 seconds and I believe it sounds like a relay switching on and off quickly.

Now for the questions! Is the fault code an over current warning and if so what is the usual cause? I believe there is a module between the fans. Does this control the fan speed or should I be looking for relays? Is there a relay controling the cooling electric circuit. If so where can I find it to see if that is the clicking I hear.

Any suggestions for DIY repairs or tests would be most welcome. I don't want to take it to Vauxhall to have them keep replacing components until the problem goes away or my wallet is empty.

    Default Further update

    Hi guys

just a quick update. The clicking noise I refer to can only be heard when I turn on the ignition and only lasts for perhaps 5 seconds after start-up. I don't hear this noise again until I have to restart the car. I have convinced myself it's electrical as it only happens when I turn the key. I still think it sounds like a relay switching at speed. Don't know if it's related to my cooling system fault or if it's something different altogether.

    Thoughts please.

This clicking noise. Will it do it when you press the "recirc" button for the air control flaps.( heater). Does it sound like it is coming from behind the glove box?.
    Edit.
If the noise is what I think it might be. Have a look here.

    Default Clicking

    Cheers Ed

not sure if it happens when I press the re-circ button but now you mention it my air con and re-circ have have been left switched on of late so it could be linked. Need to do some checks.

Could this be linked to the fact that I sprayed one of the air con treatments into the air intake last week. When I tried the same treatment last year it rusted the heater blower bearings and the resulting drag burnt out 3 resistor packs before I relubed the motor bearings.

Not sure exactly where the noise comes from but my attention is always drawn towards the clock/radio display.

If it is the recirc servo. You will find one of the teeth have broken off the gears inside. It is a common fault with them. I doubt it if the spray you used did anything wrong.
I did not know at the time but the recirc flap works by it,self in the back ground. When you turn the ignition off the flaps shut by them selves. Then open again when you open the door or turn the ignition on?.

Default Not sure if it's fuel

    Hi guys

I think that it is more likely to be the recirc servo than fuel injection. Have owned the car for two years and never heard it before so unlikely the fuel injection has developed a new noise now.

If it is the recirc servo. The noise wil just appear "from no where" when the tooth breaks off.

Brian. Try this. Start the engine. ( the clicking will start). Now press the recirc button to turn ON the recirc (close flaps). (NO noise) Now press the recirc button again ( to open the flaps). If you get the noise again then it sounds like the sevo motor has lost a tooth.

    Default Checked but no koy

Ok. Just checked the recirc button. On initial switch on the clicking sound is rapid for about 5 seconds. Still think it sounds like a relay. Pressed the recirc button during the noise but it made no difference. After the clicking had stopped I tried the recirc button a few more times. It didn't make any noise. With the engine off and listening very carefully I can hear the internal flaps moving when I press the recirc button. Very quite but you can hear it if you listen.

So back to square one. Fairly sure that I haven't dropped a tooth on the servo but can I have a sticky relay somewhere in the heater circuit?

Any thoughts on the spanner symbol that I suspect is not related to the clicking.
