The day that I thought wasn't going to be, finallly arrived today; the vxR Trackday at Thruxton. Took my Dad this year and it was an excellent day out.
Similar format to last year - we were in the PM session so we arrived about 11.45; lunch was served after 12; and the brief started at 1pm. My Dad and I were in the group to go out on the track first. First stint was out with a pro-driver showing us the line etc; then it was up to us to drive! Cars on offer - Corsa vxR, Astra vxR, Zafira vxR, vxR8 & the Insignia..... but not the vxR, instead an SRi 2.0T. We both took an Astra out for the first run; then just tried out the rest of the cars as we wanted. I left the Zafira and missed out on the insignia - they only had one to drive . This year (like last) we had a performance lap with Andrew Jordan- WOW!!! how that car stayed on the track I'll never know! and new for this year a telementry lap. Data was logged to SD card, the SD card handed to a guy with a laptop and a printout of your lap was produced. My score - 91% quite pleased with that - top speed 117 mph; 2 mph shy of the instructor time set earlier in the day.
Second part of the afternoon was the vxR experience, consisting of - The Autotest, in a Corsa SRi; usual slaloom and garage parking affair; The Wall, in an Insignia 2.0T SRi; driving with 2 wheels on a slippery service and using the driving aids to stop at the last minute before hitting the 'wall' (an inflatable one!). and finally the Pit Stop Challenge - try your hand at changing a wheel on an race-spec Astra; My Dad and I managed a respecatble 8.5 seconds
As usual, well looked after by Vauxhall and the vxR guys; a brilliant day out and well worth the money.
