    Default rear end clatter

    Hi
I have owned a 2.0dti elegance on an 02 plate now for 6 months.Over the last couple of months I noticed a rattle coming from the rear end.It has now
become so bad over the last week or two that i'm at my wits end.I have
checked under the rear but can find no obvious cause. It sounds now like a crate of empty milk bottles over the slightest bump in the road, you can hear it a good 100yds away.If i apply the brakes whilst travelling over a bump it stops.Any suggestions or clues would be greatly appreciated.By the way it is a great site you have here .'Wishes he never sold his ventora so much easier to live with '

Jesus, rattles at the rear of the car, where do I start -

    1. The tailgate can rattle (boot catch needs adjusting)?
    2. Parcel Shelf lost it's rubber grommets on the end?
    3. C Pillar could be creaking (Vx to check)?
    4. Check Spare Wheel and Toolkit?
    5. Rear Electric window linkages rattle?

I'm sure there's more so check HERE and HERE for further details.

Is the rattle coming from outside of the car or inside the boot area??? Take out the spare and jack and parcel shelf and drive and see what happens

Also check that the rear bumper support clips are in and not knocking on the rear bumper stiffener.. other than that check the rear anti-roll bar links for play..

    Hi CDTi,
I have done that ty,stripped boot out completely. It sounds from inside by laying in boot that it is coming from the centre, just behind rear seats underneath.I have checked exhaust and heat shields and they all seem ok.What i forgot to mention was that there was a loud crack about 3 months ago from the rear,e.g. like a wheel nut being cracked except about 10 times louder.I have had the wheels off and can find nothing a miss by pushing and pulling on all acessable parts and that was with the handbrake off lol.It really does sound like something is going to fall off it by the clatter, but seems weird as i said before, you apply the brakes and it stops whilst they are applied.I was just wondering as to whether anyone else had had any similar symptoms.Failing this i will have to find a local garage in the northampton area as I am new to it.

    Hi GSi3.2
Checked bumper clips and solved that by inserting foam between the inside of rear bumper and AJA and PIMM the rear is completely stripped floorwise inside .It is no longer a rattle but a clatter as if a thin metal plate is hitting something else, but as i said it stops when I touch the brakes.I will go and look at the anti roll bar bushes later on .
    Ty for all the replys
