Default Help ! Help ! Help ! - MY PETROL CAR IS FULL OF DIESEL

MY PETROL CAR IS FULL OF DESIEL

I took my sisters corsa to work yesterday as my dad needed my car for a run accross edinburgh. (he needed the sat nav) I came home from work yesterday to find my car's not on the driveway. Anyway 1am didnt want to wake him. But this morning he tells me he managed to fill it up with Diesel last night and its broken down.

The car was running on reserve e.g no petrol. my dad filled the tank thinking he was doing me a favour. so nearly 50 litres of Diesel went in. AND he drove it for 300 yards before it start coughing spluttering and finally stalled. The cars been taken to my dads pals garage. so he will let us know today what's needing done.

I've never met this guy before and dont know how good he is. But I'm going to see him in a couple of hours. What should I know about this. for example what will be damaged, what will need changed. I want to be confident he knows what he's doing before he starts pulling things apart.

any advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

IIRC from a mishap my sister had with a cavalier, all that needed doing was flushing the tank and fuel system, the cost was about £120 roughly 3 years ago. No major damage was done and the car was fine after.

I will second that. it should not do any damage if it is flushed out, deisel is only an oil and any traces should burn off with the petrol....

yep you should have no worries in just emptying the tank, and lush through the pipes. The other way round, petrol into a diesel is a complete no no.

As long as it is flushed out thoroughly it should be ok. It might be a bit smokey for a few miles whilst the remaining diesel is burnt off.
By the time your Dad has had it flushed out, filled you up, this time with petrol, it would have been cheaper for him to get himself a Tom Tom

    Confession time -

I've done that - it drove for 10 miles but it wasnt too happy and koncked out as I pulled in to the dealer forecourt parking space. You are OK with a normal diesel engine I was advised (Phew!!) and all it took was a flush, new filter and refill.
If it was a common rail then he told me it would have been rather more expensive.

Been looking around the net and the worst case scenario i've found on putting diesel in a petrol is a bit of smoking whilst the last of the diesel burns off and it's possible to kill the cat, but not seen any of these problems mentioned anywhere.

The tech info from TIS is basically that these symptoms may occur....

Following complaints could happen in one or several of them:

    • Piston top land broken (intake side)
    • Bad engine running especially after cold start and cold drive ability
    • Knocking noise (sometimes failure code P030X is set)
    • Molten catalytic converter as a consequential damage
    • Increased oil level (oil dilution)
PDF here with some extra info.

Certainly nothing about the other stuff your Dad's pal mentioned!
