It is not a connection problem. Led on/off and dimming function messages are transfered via can bus messages (light swith--->BCM--->>Instrument-->>CIM-->>Display and finally radio. If you don't send on the medium speed can bus network the suitable message you cannot light up the leds. Try making an external SMD led circuit and give it a suitable voltage.

Yes, I discovered this a while back, when I was in the early stages of my non-can install...

Judging by your posts about the mid speed can bus...do you think that if I get a BCM from a scrap car, and connect it to my GID, could I get the lighting control to work then?...there are inputs to the bcm for lighting, dimming and ignition on.
Assuming that the bcm converts these inputs to the digital output required by the GID...logically this would work.
Also I would need a cim connected to the BCM and to the low speed can wires of the display to obtain wheel radio controls and ambient temperature from the sensor.

This project is not urgent enough for me to pay the high price for these parts. The radio, cd and sat nav all work!!

Ahhh...just sussed out why my pins 19 and 20 didn't work!!!

I didn't read my own pin-out, and had green on 19 and white on 20 (GID that is).
Swapped pins to match the pin out on page 3, and all is fine...Doh!!

My next plan is to see if my K-Line and L-Line diagnostics will work on pins 22 and 23.
I have bought an ALDL (10 pin tech 1) to 16 pin EODB / Tech 2 conversion lead, which identifies the correct pins for this.
    Tech 1 / ALDL 10 pin is:- a = common, B = Engine diagnostic, and K = ABS diagnostic.
    Goes to Tech 2 16 pin 4&5 = common, 3 = K-Line (ECU) and 11 = L=Line (ABS).
Which in turn should mean the ECU goes on pin 23 and ABS goes to 22...
Will advise outcome in due course!!

There are other threads on the forum for aux-in...however CD70's manufactured before 2007 do not appear to support this function.
The software update CD dated 04/04/2007 adds the aux-in and ext-in to the on-board functions, however as said the efforts on pre 2007 radios have been un-successful.

If your's will support this, then I believe that there is a 3 pin plug taped up near the heater control loom under the radio...
The jack-socket and trim "box" are available from Vx at approx £15 I believe...

Check out the german equivalent of this site...they mention this very topic, complete with pictures etc.

    UPDATE: -

Getting nearer to fitting a BCM to control lighting and temperature functions..
Got a BCM, Made up a loom, and alsohad a spare light switch assembly to take off my dimming and lights on/off funtions.

Just need to link the lights on / off switch to a relay controlled by my existing lights.

amazingly the only link between the bcm and the display is one low speed can wire...

Pin 40 BCM to pin 28 GID.

I am inclined to believe that that the canbus system works in tri-nary rather than binary (I made that up) a bit like early house alarms do

state 0 = open circuit (broken / faulty signal)
state 1 = a specific resistance across the circuit - healthy condition
state 2 = closed circuit (activation / trigger signal).

By dismantling an old light switch unit, I can use the circuit board to create the necessary states to provide lighting and dimming functions.

The temp sensor runs across BCM pins 44 (blue/white) and Pin 47 (blue)

Will hopefully have this bit installed at the end of the month...Dreaded MOT first!!!

Good work going on there Robsey, but the canbus is more like a 'digital data packets' as apposed to 'states' of resistance...
