backlighting is normally marked up a 'led dimming control' from the BCM, so wonder if thats the same for illumination on the radio?

The CD70 requires inputs from the BCM for lighting control and also either the BCM or CIM for the temperature sensing.

I can only assume now that these inputs are in the form of a digital signal (binary code), rather than the old style voltage across the relevant can-but paired wires...green for mid-speed can High and white for mid-speed can Low (I assume green is for signal and white is for ground).

There is also a low speed can pairing as well but the inputs for this baffles me further.

I don't want to apply a voltage across the green / white pairing just in-case I blow the pants off the head unit...It would be easier for me to install some small LED's myself via a flying leads that are linked to my existing car's ignition live and switched lighting circuits.
There is bags of space within the chassis of the head-unit to pass these flying leads through.

I'll stick my meter on the LED dimming control voltage and see what it reads and see if i can replicate its function out of the car.

These are the pin outs for the GID or CID as I have it connected...as said above mine is a GID (late 2004 spec).

GID SCREEN – Full CAN for 2004 onward screens.

Pin No Colour Function Goes to:-

    6 --------- Not Used
    7 --------- Not Used
8 Blue Data Line to radio pin 39
9 Yellow Data Line to radio pin 33
    10 upto 16 - Not Used
17 Green Mid Speed CAN Hi BCM Climate Control / DAB
18 White Mid Speed CAN Lo BCM Climate Control / DAB

    26 & 27 ------ Not Used
28 Green Lo Speed CAN Hi
    29 onward…not used

For my Non CAN vehicle fitting GID pin 22 was linked to radio pin 9 and
GID pin 23 was linked to radio pin 10…
    I haven’t found connections for my GID pins 19 & 20.

I only used the connections that are |Not shown in Black writing.

If you have a CID screen, you will need a VGA link cable…the wires for this are

VGA plug pin no. Colour Goes to Radio VGA plug pin no.

    1 Grey 5
    2 Brown 1
    7 Blue 3
    8 Brown 4
    10 Sheath 10
    11 Sheath 9
    15 Red 8
    16 Green 7

It is easier to get a link cable from a donor / scrap vehicle.

Pin-outs for the radio to follow.

I don't want to use my centre vents for 2 reasons..

    1) I use them a lot to keep cool...
    2) The screen is much bigger than the vent aperture...

A second thought I had was to put the screen in the cubby-hole above my glove box as I don't have a passenger air-bag.

I use my near-side mirror quite a lot, so it's not as if I don't look that way anyway....

Plasma, did you get anywhere with the led dimming control?
my only concern was that a lot of Vx electronic devices don't like digital test meters...I believe some damage can be caused in some cases...er on the side of caution...I'd rather you didn't check it, rather than you wrecked your own...this is only a pet project of mine and is not urgent enough to risk your own kit.

Well it's been a while now and here is the progress so far.

I got the following parts: -
    1) SOT122 lead, which I slightly modified to allow me to wire up the display, the head unit and an auxilliary input or blue toot if I wish.

    2) An old tom tom go (4 yr old model) aerial and fitted a fakra plug to it.

    3) An ISO to fakra aerial conversion lead

    4) Got a donor Cav heater control panel and cut and shut the GID screen surround into the Black heater Board Computer plastic panel.

I have got the electrics all working (except for the BC functions, head unit lighting and ambient temperature reading as expected).

Here is the display fitted into the heater panel.
As stated above, I will be fitting different bowden cables and mounting the heater panel where the fag lighter currently sits.

The big job is yet to come...making a whole new radio panel surround that doesn't look like a dogs dinner!!!

It will be a very slow "work in progress" type thing as I am having to do a few bits here and a few bits there.
Although I've now got the bug to get it done!!!

Here is the screen mounted into the "Ex" heater panel and it's position in relation to the head unit. sorry about the picture...taken with my phone camera

    Thumbs up

Continueing on, I have done a trial fit in my car today...
Not for the faint hearted, had to hack a few sections out of my dash to allow the rather tall screen trim to fit under the centre air vents, and also remove the centre cross spar that holds the plastic shell that locates the radio cage.

As a temporary thing, I tucked my blower cables out the way and set the blower to speed two, before tucking the switch away also...This will all be relocated where the ashtray sits in due course.

Gave it a test on the way home and all the following functions worked perfectly..
Sat Nav...took about twenty minutes to lock onto the car, but this only applies on first power up after installation.
Radio...works brilliantly even with the aerial down (there are two tuners in the nav unit...the second is for TMC)
CD and MP3 with ID3 tagging...if you can read my display in the picture, you will see I'm an 80's music fan.

    So here it is installed!!!
