    Default Cracked Window

I would like to start a mini survey on how many people have experienced window problems with either the pre-face lift and the face lifted Vectra/Sigma.

Reason: I came out of the airport last friday, which was a warm day to find my screen cracked from the offside bottom corner up towards the centre. It was only abou 100mm long but every day it got bigger. When the fitter came yesterday I asked him if he had done the face lift version as it was a new design, really just to check if he had tackled tha trim that covers the screen at the sides. His reply actually shocked me. He said he had done hundreds and he was not joking, but how much of this was accurate I dont know. But the question I would put to the family is how many have had cracked screens for no/little reason and do we really have a problem with thin screens to keep the weight down etc etc.

i've never had a problem with mine.

all cracks will increase in size over time due to the vibration, not necessarily the thickness of the glass - not sure if this was one of your concerns.

I've had my screen replaced.... it cracked right in the middle at the top and ran down over the rain sensor then hung a right towards the drivers side. No sign of any chips or anything.

Had it replaced no problem through AutoGlass - never thought to ask if he had done any before.

I've noticed at slow speeds on bumpy ground the screen seems to creak a bit, or at least it sounds like the screen... at least being laminated it won't shatter... Not actually cracked yet.

Wouldn't that point to something flexing in the body of the car rather than a defect in the screen itself though?

Unlike the old rubber mounted front and rear screens, these days, fully bonded-in laminated screens as used as part of the structure - to stiffen up the shell. Once they start to go, the crack usually grows fast - particularly when the car's used on bumpy roads (stiff springing can't help either!).

I've seen it alot on the VW Audi range (as well as mirror glasses) but other makes with cracked screens usually have a stonechip somewhere thats started it. I've done 55k since last April and my screen has not had a crack or chip yet .... completely covered in pitts though

Got a huge bang last week on the M-way, stone from a wagon flick up and I saw it for a split second coming towards me, I blinked, bang, as it hit the windscreen. "Oh f**k, I thought, there goes a windscreen". When I puled off the m-way, I stopped and had a look and the stone has only made the faintest of chips, not noticable but, you feel the slight nick with your finger.

Maybe I was lucky and the stone hit it at an angle where the stone didn't impact enough to dig into the glass. The bang was load enough. Done 300 miles today and its been fine.
