Don't know if this has been posted before but after watching a re-run of Top Gear about car safety this got me thinking. How safe are we and how are the tests done.
So i did some checking and found THIS

We're safe enough but not so any pedestrians we hit.

    Ahem, you forgot this.

You definitely don't want to be a pedestrian being hit by a Signum!! Don't understand that though!? It's an identical front end to the Vec!

It was interesting to see damage difference between the cars from a 2 star rating up to a 5 star. Made me glad i got rid of my Freelander (3 star) as the result was frightening.

I know you are only joking really Spikey, and a lot of pedestrians are a deliberate nuisance, but you have to consider young kids, at 8 yrs old they have no idea of the dangers the road presents, in the last few days I had to have a word with a young male driver about his tecnique, he came flying out of a side road at me amongst parked cars and kids playing, ok he backed up and let me through, but he's defo candidate to collect a kid as a bonnet badge sooner or later if he hasn't listened to what i told him, and only earlier this evening while i gave way to an oncoming car *that wasn't going any more than 15 mph* as he got to the gap a girl all excited playing ran into the gap, luckily he saw her in time and I shouted at her, as I got another 100 yrds up the road another one ran across me like a cat.

I had this happen to me almost 20 yrs ago, the kid actually hit me but it still resulted in the kid having a broken leg, so when the car maker comes up with a system that fully protects them i'll be a happy bunny.

    My solution would be

    A - Remove speed humps

B - Fit hugger spoiler to front

C - Make the front slope like a lump of cartoon cheese

D - Make all cars with engine in the rear

E - Make front from 2 inch rubber compound

If you look at the points difference between the Vectra and the Saab 9-3, the Saab only got the 5 star because it has a seat belt warning as standard, which some Vectras used to. Otherwise it was (unsurprisingly) near identical.

So basically, unless you're daft enough to drive without a seatbelt, you can consider the Vectra to be practically 5 star.

Funny thing NCAP, between 3-4 star the difference is huge, but between a good 4 star and a "only just" 5 star the difference is nothing...

Sad they dont test "active safety" ... but carmags do atleast ... ( moose test )

The first car to recive 5 star in Euro Ncap, Renault Laguna got a 1 in the moose test .... It did a strike with the traffic cones in the test ...

So good passive safety, but cr*p active safety ...

    Not a car i would buy ...

So passive safety dont tell the whole story.
