I thought this was probably best suited for this section.
I was curious as to what the dumbest thing people have done in a car. I'm not talking about spinning donuts, or that kind of 'reckless' sort of behaviour/driving. More something that you did in a car that you look back and shudder slightly and think "I can't believe I did that!!"
I'll start with the sort of thing I'm getting at.....
It was my first car, a nice car at that - 94 (L) Astra F 1.6 CD - so one I wanted to look after!
Was driving some long distance somewhere with my then girlfriend on the motorway. Listening to music and decided that a CD change was in order. The 6 CD changer was in the glove box so girlfriend went to open the glovebox. It was locked, as I hadn't unlocked before we set off.
"Bummer" I thought, we can't change the CD's. I had an idea!! I'll drop it into neutral, pop the key out of the ignition, hand it to her to quickly to unlock the glove compartment and hand the key back. I'll then just start it in fifth gear and let the clutch up slowly.
I had seen there was a long sweeping right hander coming up and didn't think it'd be a problem. I knew I'd lose the power steering but I'd just have to give it a bit more effort as the curve started - no big deal.
There was one minor detail that I had completely overlooked!! As I gave her the key and started to move the wheel a bit, there was a bit of a click and, yep - you guessed it, the steering lock had, err, locked!!
I calmy said to her "Give me the key back." She looked at me kinda scornfully as she hadn't yet unlocked the glove compartment. Slight panic took over at this point as I could see the hard shoulder coming ever closer!! "Give me the ferking key!!!!" managed to get the correct action from her. Sorry ladies, there was no time to be polite!
I stuck the key in the ignition and released the steering lock just as the wheels started to go over the rumble strip!!
I pulled into the next services and duly changed my underwear!!
So that's my dumbest thing so far. I'm sure somebody can better it?
