Saab 900 convertible

I am going to look at a '96 Saab 900 convertible tonight with the idea of some summer fun for me. The owner is a pilot and he bought a new Saab and it has sat in his driveway ever since, about 3 months. He now has decided he want's it off his driveway.

My friend is his next door neighbour and he went round to take a look and the details I have are: Red gone pink in places, auto and a 2 litre with AC, cracked leather, scuff on one bumper and no MOT. They tried to start it but the battery was flat. It obviously needs service, MOT, tax, valet and battery for him to even get someone to look at it. I wouldn't mind taking it off him as is but what level of offer? I assume average mileage 130k+ and 3 or 4 owners so it's worth about £1,500. So I was thinking about £500?

Any common problems with them?

I remeber seeing one on here I thought in the detailing section but can't seem to find the thread now.

Haven't bought it yet Glen, £500 is what I was aiming to pay for it but could get a rude respsonse and upset him.

I can test drive it on the private road about 1/4 mile long.

May need longer than that mate to make sure there are no over heating issues

and when you collect it make sure its either on a trailer - or your driving to a pre arranged mot test/centre -just in case the local constabulary are out and about

I looked at getting a 9-3 conv. I think they are really nice cars. BUT I decided against it given the current financial disaster. Maybe another time though...

I have arranged with my friend the use of his drive until I can get an MOT slot.
