Default £30 16" steel & tyre for spare - good deal?

    Hi all,

My car has 17" alloys and a spacesaver spare. I am looking to get a 'proper' wheel/tyre for the boot so I don't get stuck miles from home and have to limp back on the spacesaver at below 50 MPH.

I have found a 16" steel wheel with a good tyre for £30 + VAT. Is this a good price?

Also, can anyone confirm if this would fit my car (wheel bolt holes in the same place?), if it would have the same size diameter as my alloys (i.e. is the tyre bigger?), and if it will fit in the boot of my hatch without making a bump in the middle?

Thanks. Better ideas also appreciated .

What car did it come off? If a Vectra C/Signum then it should fit fine.

As you have a hatch then it will fit in the spare wheel well just fine - you may just need to remove the plastic spacer bit.

Whether it will have the overall approx. diameter as your 17s depends on what profile you have on your 17s and what profile the 16 has.

    Thanks Duncan.

I will try the steel wheel to see if it will fit before buying it. One thing I have thought of is to make sure that it comes with a non-directional tyre rather than an unidirectional tyre so I can fit it on either side!

Also, they have 3 Elite alloys so I may see if they are undamaged - 2 to replace my damaged ones and one for the spare - if a 17" will fit in the boot.

You can fit directional tyres the wrong way round, you just need to restrict speed - it mentions it in the manual ie no different to the space-saver. Mind you, I wouldn't treat a different sized wheel any differently - I'd want matching wheels and tyres to use full performance.

Keep you eyes and ears out - I found a 17" alloy with same size tyre for £12!
