I have just bought one from ebay, cost £30 and reads the car faults ok. My car is a 52 reg 1.8 club and it read the codes from it no probs. you need to get the one with the following code U480 as it will read the can-bus codes. this is the language the car talks in. I found these scanners by typing in U480 in the search box.

    Hope this helps.

thanks guys, the reason for the post is that the temp warning light has come on but there is no loss of water and the temp gauge is reading as usual, other threads have said it may just be the sender unit in the header tank that is at fault, so it could be cheaper in the long term to just buy a decoder, thanks againfellas

Doubt that would set a fault. Sounds like either the sensor movement is restricted or it's not fitted properly.

You may be able to read faults for free (1.8 seems to be able) - just look the the 'How to' section for instructions.
