    Default Optimum speed/gear for mpg?

Hi guys i drive a cdti 150 and i usually drive to work at 60 mph in 6th on cruise and return around 55/60mpg but the other day the traffic was chocker and i was on cruise at 50 in 5th. the onboard computer said i was averaging 75/80 mpg. Is this right?

Would be interesting to see what everyone else gets

    Tom

I drive a CDTI 150 Signum on 19 inch wheels and likewise set the cruise at about 65 on pretty good, not too busy 'A' roads (A9 - 20 - 25 miles each way to work every day) and over the last 7000 miles or so I've averaged about 49 mpg. There's been some motorway/dual carraigeway in there too at the weekends and when I overtake I drop at least into fourth and go for it. My best so far was the 430 miles or so bringing the car north from its last home in Wrexham, 75 motorway and 65 A roads = 52.5 mpg. All in all, pretty good for a big comfy car.

Ive only just got mine, covered 502 miles now for work, 62 miles a day, 99% motorway and BC says 49mpg.

Its still got 1.4 tank left so very impressed that I have covered 502 miles already !!

I just looked at mine today actually and over 10,000 miles I've averaged 48mpg over a mixture of motorway, A roads, urban and country lanes.

I find CC on the motorway at 67 gives the best mpg - around 30 miles gives 55+ and the more miles I do the more the mpg goes up - 64mpg is the best I have seen.

My current journey, which is about 5 miles m/way and 5 mils in town, I get around 43mpg.

Never drive at more than 2000 revs in any gear, preferably at 1500 or less. I think I'd rather cut my legs off, and my turbocharger would seize up through lack of use. I am given to believe the 'sweet spot' is around 55/60 mph in top gear, again I'd rather cut my legs off.

    I also pondered this question.

I even wrote to Vauxhall asking them which was the most fuel efficient speed on flat level road (ie steady state cruising)

They wouldn't answer it with a definite answer. Seemed poor to me that they didn't know (or much more likely, DID know but wouldn't say)
