    Default 1st gear problems.

It started yesterday. Reversed into a parking space and when I went to select 1st gear to pull forward there was no way that it was going in. I tried about 10 times with the clutch but nothing. I had to open the door and move the car with my foot and then it went in.

Also went out in the car last night and same again at a set of lights. This time I put it into 2nd just to get it to move and then it slipped into 1st.

Had a trip to the dealer with it this morning but as per usual it behaved itself whilst I was there so they told me to keep an eye on it and the service controller said he would look into whether there has been similar problems anywhere else.

But worst was to come later on today.

Parked up in a car park and after I reversed out of the space I couldn't select 1st again. Tried everything but it wouldn't go in until I let it roll forward abit. Pulled further down to the exit but then it did it again but this time after a few attempts it slipped in or so I thought. Dropped the clutch to find to my horror that I was actually moving backwards. I quickly knocked it out of gear, sat there in amazement and tried again and guess what, straight into reverse. I couldn't believe it.

On the third attempt it went into 1st and I pulled away but found somewhere to park up and phoned the dealer immediately. Was told to get the car to them next Monday were they will have it until they get to the bottom of what is going on and told me that they will also inform Vauxhall as this is a very serious issue.

I will keep you informed what the outcome is.

Did you try lifting the clutch while in neutral before trying to select 1 again?

Does sound bad though, hopefully it's just an issue with the way the selector is set up and not the box itself.

Hopefully something simple like the adjustment of one of the cables on the selector arm has come a bit adrift. e.g. if you "lean" the stick towards third
gear as you put it in first, does that help?

2nd gear should work in the meantime, so long as it's not a hill start with 5-up and 10 bags of charcoal in the boot.

Mine's done that a couple of times but never had to make more than a couple of shots at getting it to engage.

Just to keep you all posted.

Dropped the car off at the dealers on Monday and was given a crappy corsa 1.2 club until Saturday. Anyway went to see what they had done on Tuesday and all they had managed to do was a couple of recalls what ever they were and a couple of updates on the sat nav and EMS so not very happy that they hadn't tackled the gear change problem which incidentally nearly caused me to ram the car behind me at a set of lights when I pulled away thinking that I was in 1st last weekend. So left a bit deflated.

Rang them this morning for an update and was told to go and see them on my way home from work this afternoon.

Basically was told that the tech chap had driven my car yesterday and couldn't fault it so they phoned Vauxhall to ask what they should do next and was told that if they couldn't recreate the fault then they were to leave it alone until the customer brought the car back with the fault.

As you can imagine my blood was starting to boil at this stage but then the workshop controller informed me that he didn't really want to tell me the good news so he gave it one last go this morning and again no problem until..................as he was parking the car up it did it. Took him completely by surprise.

He phoned Vauxhall immediately and told them what he had found and they were as surprised as he was. He tried to recreate the fault on his company car insignia but was unable to do so.

They have now traced the fault to the actual gear stick and assembly. He called it the 'Turret'.

When I got there he came and showed me that he could actually get it to go into reverse at will and that he was also having trouble sometimes finding 1st but said to just put it into 2nd and then it will find 1st. He as ordered a new gear stick and selector but it has to come from Germany and will take up to 10 days to arrive so they have given me my car back and I just have to be a little careful when selecting 1st.

I don't know whether I should have taken the car like it is or not?

This is the problem with new models You the customer has to put up with crap because the manufacturer cant be arsed to get it right in the first place.Thats why i would not touch em until most faults are ironed out.
