    Default IT help, home wetworking

I want to access my desktop from my laptop, so to share files etc.

The desktop runs XP Home, and the Laptop runs Vista.

Both are connected via ethernet cables to a hub with wireless too (switched off at presemnt) and both access internet just fine.

I have set both to the same workgrioups name, and 'shared' 2 folders on desktop, but cannot access them at all from Laptop, or even setup the sharing thing.

    Help me, please

Try turning off your firewalls, windows or otherwise.

XP & Vista will work together (providing a couple of dependencies are met).

Ste, from your desktop (XP) can you see the 'Sharing & Security' option when you right click the folder you want to share - then select the 'Share this folder' radio button and give it a share name (it defaults to the folder name usually) leave the share permissions alone as these should be left as they are (everyone = read) and the security should be locked down by the security tab - now, you will only have this security tab if the drive in which you are sharing folders on has been formatted in NTFS format - FAT16 etc you won't be able to set permissions - which thinking about it, this is probably what the problem is.

What format is the drive in Ste..? (Right click the c: / d: etc in My Computer then click properties - and it will be listed next to 'File System').

My set-up uses 2 XP PC's. When I first them up, the shares were not visible between the PCs and I couldn't work out why. Eventually turned off Zonealarm and it worked! I've since reconfigured/re-enabled ZA to allow network traffic between the PC's.

Being FAT32 you will only be able to share a directory, and therefore everything within (and maybe password protect it) but you can't narrow down to specific files/folders etc. You would need NTFS for that but, the share method should be the same as above.

The firewalls could be causing problems, especially so if they are 3rd party ones.

If you wanted to convert your drive to NTFS, you can do it by doing the following:

From a command prompt type "convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
    "

(If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting (which it more than likely will be), it will ask you to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. just click yes.

You'll get a message like "The type of the file system is FAT." and it will ask you to enter a name for the volume, then once done, you receive a message saying its complete.

What's the difference between folders and directories?

Sharing the entire drive would be fine, I just wanted to do it a bit more cleanly.
