Car is a 2006 auto 2.2 direct petrol Vectra Elite.
Last night within 5 yards of pulling away the car cut out. Refused to restart, just cranking over and over. Car/spanner light was lit (but that's from a previous fault and goes out when the engine is running - so only indicating a stored code). In fact it went out while I was cranking the engine over last night.
Got out, looked under the bonnet at the mass of plastic covering the engine and hastily shut it again. Tried to restart, still refused.
I then locked and unlocked the car, and bingo it started. However 20 yards down the road the same thing happened. Just cut out, no spluttering beforehand, just died. Again refused to start until I opened the drivers door, closed it, locked it with the remote, then unlocked it, opened the door again and closed it. It continued playing up 3 or 4 more times, then ran right as rain after that. Initially the car/spanner light was on when the engine was running, then it went out and stayed out.
Got home, turned the engine off. Started up again with no dramas. Car/spanner light remains on until the engine is running, which I know is indicating a stored fault code.
I tried the pedal trick, both when the light remained on with the engine running, and when it only stayed lit until the engine is running. Didn't work, so was unable to flash up any fault codes.
Luckily the car is in on Monday for a service & MOT. Will get them to look while I still have 2 or 3 weeks warranty remaining.
In the meantime, does anyone have any idea why the car cut out, then refused to start until I locked and unlocked the doors? Car spanner light wasn't flashing, so I don't think it was immobiliser related.
I know ultimately the fault code *should* reveal the problem, but in the meantime.....
