WAHEEEEY!!!! I'm now coming to you wirelessly on my new laptop. Following much wailing and gnashing of teeth to get the bl**dy wireless network set up So there we have it, no more fighting over the PC. Cool

BTW, in one of the other threads on the subject of wireless connections, some guys mentioned about picking up other networks. My laptop picked up 2 unsecured and 2 secured networks .Now I don't know what range these things have but it must be pretty good. I know where one of them is coming from though. The bloke over the back from me is often in his conservatory with his laptop. Fortunately I've secured mine with a password (well, pass numbers). AES type security I think it is. You guys will know better than me LOL.

Depending on different set-ups, building design etc. range can be as much as 300ft without any special gear.

You can check easily by going to 'control panel' then click on 'network connections' you'll see 'my network places' in the left hand panel, click that and then you should see 'view workgroup computers' that will show you all the computers connected to your network.

Isn't that only if they're onto your actual computer network? A firewall could stop them doing that - but they could still be leeching your internet connection through the router.

The best way, I'd have thought, would be to go into the router itself and see what devices/IP address assignment is listed? Anything other than your own devices then indicates a leecher. Obviously they'd have had to get around your security, or you've left it totally unsecured for that to happen.

Password protection is all you need to stop someone using your network, most people don't bother though, there network is then available for use to anyone that wants to use it.

Yes that would be the best way, but chances are it'd only be a numpty neighbour without the knowledge to set up on your network without using the network wizard. In which case they're most likely gonna show up in your workgroup on a basic home setup, they might even have named their computer "JOHNS PC" or something so you might even know which neighbour it is so you can go and have a quiet word.
