Question Looking for a 3.0 CDTi - anything I should know?

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently selling my Subaru WRX STi V (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/76204.htm) and plan to swap it for a Vectra 3.0 CDTi V6 SRi which I expect to chip with a powerklick box. I've got a 60 mile per day commute now and am hoping for decent performance when I want it and decent economy when I don't. I notice people are claiming 42-48 mpg out of the V6 CDTi even when chipped - is this common? I don't drive with a lead foot and get 24-25 mpg out of the Subaru decatted which is pretty uncommon so should I expect mid 40s+ mpg on my mainly motorway commute?

Are there any things I should look out for when buying a 3.0 CDTi, has anything much changed on them since they've been out?

I expect I'll get a 54 reg from network Q if they can find one. The local vauxhall dealer rang me up the other day with a 54 in met grey with leather & 5000 miles for 12495 but when they looked into it it turned out it had already gone Oh well I'm not in a hurry. There don't really seem to be any facelifted V6 CDTi's about but I notice some mention of certain standard equipment before the facelift becoming optional after - so what do the later ones lose?

Do the post facelift cars have better handling? Do the pre facelift cars handle ok on the standard SRi suspension or do people tend to put aftermarket springs and dampers on them? I'm not after something rock hard and 'slammed to the max!', just something that goes around corners ok and can cope with the power. The 04 car I test drove seemed ok though I didn't really get to go around that many sharp corners.

Armoured Farmer - your car looks very swish Actually just about everyone's car on here looks very swish! Never thought I'd be hankering after a Vectra

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

    Cheers,

    Eric.

I personally have the 3.0 CDTi Signum, it's an excellent engine and an excellent car,
my car is chipped and I average around 33mpg around town and local A roads(leaving the boy racer's at the light's), on a decent run on Motorway and A road driving trying very hard to obey speed limts where possible(it is hard to stick to the speed limits, damn cars so smooth and quiet) I average 42-44mpg.

Good luck in your search for your new car, Vectra or Signum, they are both really good cars.

    Thanks.

That's pretty darn good from a big engine in quite a big car. I was impressed how smooth and un-diesel like it was and that they actually make a really nice noise like a sort of muted V8.

Is a Signum with the sports suspension option similar to drive to an SRi?

I have an 05 v6 cdti sri. It goes great. It handles pretty good on the standard sri suspension too. I average about 37mpg between Motorway and B-roads and I have quite a heavy right foot! You won't be dissapointed when you get one especially if you get it powerclick'ed as I have.

It does sound like the way to go! A powerful, very torquey, nice sounding engine that's pretty economical too - wow!

What are the service intervals for the diesel V6? Does anything tend to go wrong on them?

I have the Design model, it has lowered and stiffened sports suspension and I also have 18's as standard, handles relatively well for a big car without compromising ride quality.(I actually think it's better than the Sri vec).

    Service intervals are 20,000miles.
Not really had mine long enough to comment on problems as yet as I've not had any.

Sounds good. I'll have to consider Signums too.

20k service intervals should save me a lot of hassle

As said they are a cracking car. I've had mine for just over a year and covered nealy 9k in that time. The only thing to go wrong is a broken road spring which will be replaced under warranty as soon as it arrives (back order ). Other than that its not so much as coughed. The only reason I'm soon to be selling mine is to get a facelift!
