Default Autobox - Loss of Drive on 3.2 GSI

    Hi guys and gals....

Well im back again with another autobox fault.. but this time i think its terminal? (but i always think that??!!)

The misses was driving home Yesterday...and rang to say that the Veccy was revving but not increasing speed she said it was " just like the clutch is slipping"

She was only a mile away from Home but managed to get back.. but by the time she got it back there was no drive at all from the box. I jumped in.. and put it in every gear using the semi-auto part and NOTHING just revved its A*se off!! not even drive in reverse.

The was the tiniest bit of torque felt (just like clutch biting but not enough to drive the wheels) when putting it into 1st the first time i got in it... but that was only for a split second... and now its dead!!

Checked the oil and it was level... and dark red (IT HAS HAD THE COOLANT SEAL MOD DONE so thats out of the equasion!!)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?? or had similar problems?

2 autobox specialists i've spoken too said its strange for all 5 gears and reverse to go all at once.

I was thinking maybe torque converter or flex plate has gone but what ever it is is common to all 5 gears or the final drive.

Cheers In advance for your help guys!!

Its a long shot.. but u guys always seem to help!

That sounds like the problem I had , and it's not good news mate.
Loss of drive in all gears , then if you leave it for a bit you get a little back but only intermittently.
Is there a whining noise at all ?
That's what happened to mine , and it was the pump filter pickup was blocked with all the sheared components of the autobox.
Only way to tell properly is get the box out , you have to do this to access the torque convertor anyway.
It's about 2 - 3 hours work if you have a ramp and the correct tools as you need to drop the subframe .
I would probably be tempted to drop the transmission fluid into a container , and check for foreign objects as your 1st port of call.
But like I say , it sounds kapput to me , and your looking at a minimum of £2000 to rebuild the box and recondition the torque convertor.
Autoboxes sometimes are available at breakers yards , but it's a gamble as to whether your buying another lemon , or if it will recognize the ecu's in your car.
Vx need these autoboxes shoving right where the sun don't shine

The drive went from 'slipping' to complete loss of drive in less than a mile. And now there is not one ounze of drive left... there is slight 'whurring' from the box when u try and drive it ( or rev in gear and get nowhere??!!) .. but nothing scarey!!

what ever it is has to be common to all 5 gears and reverse?? and the only things i can think of in that bracket are the Torque converter, a hydraulic valve/port problem or the oil pressure in the box??

someone told me that the GM boxes have a felt filter in the oil pan of the autobox... that can block up from crap of the cltuch bands and wear etc... this drops oil pressure and the box dont work.?? that been heard of by anyone else??

Im stummped and skint..... so extreemly tempted to drop the box my self... and have a ****** good nosey at it??

thats after dropping all the oil and checking so see if any nasties come out.

    Any imput appriciated.

    Cheers

A slight "whurring" can sometimes indicate that one of the drive shafts splines are shagged.

well its now got even weirder???!!!

Got in the Vectra to try and move it on Sat.. and it drove fine?? No whurring .. took it for a 10 mile drive.. flat out hard up and down the box where possible and not a single problem or hessitance to change gear or slip..... and drove it a couple of times over the weekend and all fine

got in it yetserday... drove 1 mile away from home... and it started slipping again.. then nothing.... sat there for 20 mins wondering how to get it home.... and with it sat in D (drive) ... it clunked back into gear.... and got limited.. and slipping drive .. just enough to get me back home??!!

To me its sounds like maybe a faulty Solenoid insode the box.. or maybe a problem with the Oil/hydraulic valves, actuators or porting??

any vaux/ auto box wizards out there able to shed any light???

    Cheers

    Vince

God only knows the amount of hatred I feel towards the AF33 gearbox. It's a rubbish design. And that's the end of it.

I had mine replaced under warranty and it still isn't right. 1 year of warranty left on the gearbox. Hopefully getting rid of it later this year or in 2010.
