    Thumbs up carb cleaner or engine degreaser? (egr related)

    if cleaning the egr valve and soliniod am i best off using carb cleaner or engine degreaser? i have plenty of engine degreaser but will i be making the problem worse in the long run using it.

    I'd say it's best to clean it as thoroughly as possible and then apply new grease where needed (the solenoid mechanism). Having said that, I cleaned mine first of all with carb cleaner which is pretty effective but the second time I cleaned it was with paraffin and that was just as good - a quick spray with carb cleaner then removed all the paraffin residue. I found this a more cost-effective way of using carb cleaner which tends to get used up pretty quickly otherwise.

    i soaked mine in neat very cherry wheel cleaner and it came out looking brand new

    Did the valve assembly with White Spirit & stiff paint brush.

    Sprayed WD40 into the solenoid around the rod for cleaning that part, I didn't need to dismantle the solenoid.

    i cleaned mine in diesel then rinsed of with carb cleaner, diesel is an excellent degreaser and you dont need much, apply with a brush.

    I use brake cleaner, it dissolves most of the crud and the excess evaporates away, any stubborn crud I just scrape off with a screwdriver wrapped in a rag soaked in brake cleaner, brings them up like new.
