I wondered about this too. I was told by the Vx service guys that the new part is a re-design and fixes the original issue. However, that's easy to say when the original part fails typically after 40 to 50 thousand miles. I'm sure the original design was supposed to last significantly longer than that so I guess we'll have to wait and see - perhaps there are some people doing starship mileage with the newer design that can tell us?

If you can get a new EGR that is guys as I was talking to Ian at MPG and he mentioned that they are all on back order and there is a huge waiting list.
Its a shame you couldnt find out who makes the EGR and contact them direct and see if you can buy one of them avoiding the middle man like VX and Part suppliers etc.

I had a new EGR fitted on 29th May, the dealer had it "in stock" (and yes I have to pay the huge £275 or so for the work to be done - the call failed big time and I limped 140 miles back off holiday on a Thurday and it was fixed on the Friday)

How can I tell if it the old or new design?

£275 for a new EGR to be fitted????
What a shocking price, you can buy the part alone for about £110, and fit it yourself in under 20mins!!!

    Robbing *******s!

Yes I know - that dealers for you!

The killer was the 1.75 hours which included the diagnosis.

Basically my stealer charge £80 to have a look!

The car was in a really bad way I cant believe it was only the EGR valve - it had no power on slopes at all and made strange noises and loads of smoke!

The only killer I now have it that the car is still not completely right - it was a bit sluggish at times before the EGR went and now ater the new one there is something missing - cant put my finger on it - its just that tick over at cold is quite right and the power upto aropund 2500 just isnt there.

I have to hope someone on here can help me suss it out and point the hoses I need to check out - plus whether a strange looking one I have that isnt connected, whether it should be connected!

at the end of the day, Having a new design part may help in the clogging factor but you are still going to get a sooted up EGR valve.

An EGR valve has exhaust gases flowing through it so it's going to get mucky.

Iv heard about blanking off the egr but am unsure of the effects this might have on the engine? i believe the egr stands for electronic gas recircalation that allows the fumes from exhaust back into the engine? does it open up when you put your foot down or close when you put your foot down?
