    Default Buying a car soon...

Now that I am 17 and learning to drive, the time has come to buy a car

I am planning to go round the dealerships this Saturday to see what cars they have that have been traded in and are selling for a reasonable price. I know what sort of car I am looking for (most likley a Vectra B), but if you have any other suggestions fire away, I am open to any ideas.

My question would be what sorts of things should I be looking for - what kind of mileage is acceptable, how can you tell if a car has been abused etc.

I am not planning to buy tomorrow, but I will be buying soon. I will make a list of everything in my price bracket that I come across and post them here, and I would really appreciate it if you could express opinions / concerns etc.

I do know someone who can come and check out a car for mechanical faults etc, so anything I buy will go through them first.

Also, is it actually worth buying a cheap-ish car (£1500 MAX) from a dealer, or are private sales better?

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated - I am new to all this!!

    Thanks

Take a firnd in the know with you, if you don't know anyone pay a mechanic to give it the once over after you have found a good one you like. I think you may need to get a smaller car for cheaper insurance though.

you can find some cheap bargains at dealers that people have part-ex'ed in and the dealer wants to shift it off the forecourt. But saying that, a lot of garages now just send part ex deals straight to auction

Firstly, welcome to freedom !! - You will love having your own car, and remember you will always remember your first car !! - forever !! (so make it a good one - lol)

If you go for fancy, 16V, Turbo, slick looking cars, you will probably end up in mechanical trouble quite quickly. Mainly because everyone else before you has given it a good kicking. Fast cars get used, simple as that.

Cars with loads of gadgets, ABS, Injection systems, Turbos etc etc... will all cost a lot of money to repair, so if you dont get a good one it could blow your budget just to keep it on the road.

So I guess it will be does the heart rule your head, or the other way round.

Some of the most reliable cars are the plain ones.. Astra MkIII 8V for instance, slow, basic, undesirable... but very cheap and reliable.

Simple cars usually cost less, but look plain.

With second hand cars, its important to ensure they are HPi checked (make sure there isnt outstanding finance on it), make sure it isnt stolen, make sure it hasnt been written off etc. HPI checks are fairly cheap.

Check the car for defects. tyres, leaking suspension struts, lights, electrics, engine oil condition, brakes, etc... everything you find thats wrong or broken you can use to barter the price down (if you still want the car)

Take it for a drive and notice anything that doesnt feel right. Does it brake in a straight line, without noise. Does it steer in a straight line. Are there any clunks or scraping noises. Do the gears all change smoothly. Does the clutch slip under load (leave the handbrake on and load up the clutch).

When you turn up, pop the bonnet is the engine warm. Warm engines always start better and sound better. You preferable want to hear it start from cold.

Does it 'feel' like a good car? Go look at other cars of the same type, even newer ones outside your price range. It will give you a feel to what the car should be like

I have to say that it doesnt always work like that...

In the old days I used to drive a 2.0 Litre Ford Granada Ghia X and it was similar in price to a 1.3 Ford Escort

It all depends on the insurance company and what they see as 'risk'

I'd try your luck and dont dismiss any car until you've got a quote !

my 1st car was a 2l focus (group 7 i think and a low risk family car)
Same with the vec vxr now, its a big family saloon at the end of day. that does 170mph

Nova's used to get ragged and most were crashed, hence horrendous image and insurance costs. Like the mitsi FTO now, i think they are the second most crashed car by under 25's.......It doesn't make you a bad driver, but to insurance, statistics are everything
