Signum at stealers today as air con/climate not cooling at all. I checked it last night and when selecting air compressor on it didn't seem like it was actually kicking in as there was no change to the air blowing inside car and no drop in rpm or noise of it switching on. When dropped off they said if it needs regas then cost me £80. If they find a component is faulty or they find a leak then warranty will fix it. Well u can guess what they did.....emptied it, vacuumed it, re gassed, leak checked....no leaks (surprise, surprise). Cost me the £80. Funny that the gas has gone but it hasn't leaked....mmmmmmmmmm What a ****** con. Car is only 30 months old, am writing to Vauxhall and NetworkQ as am not happy with this. I had a front end accident in November and the mechanic said it was damaged 'close' to the air con radiator. It was all repaired by Vx.
Every other car I have had with air con/climate has gone at least 3 years without any air con issues at all.
After getting car back it is definitely cooling now and when compressor selected you can hear it kicking in and the engine note changes slightly. Can any techies confirm that if the gas is low then the compressor wont actually kick in because this is what must have been happening in this case?

I found a good way to tell if the air con is working (at least on mine) is to sit at idle with your instant MPG showing, mine uses 0.2 without AC as soon as AC goes on it jumps to 0.3, might not work for everyone.

yes there is a saftey cut in to prevent damage - low gas will cause this to kick in
the likelyhood is there is a small leak somewhere on one of the seals - hopefully they added some lubricant/dye as part of the regas process so that in the event that it fails again they will be able to see the loss and identify the necessary component to replace - under warranty this time-

My AC is still working great and my car is just over 5 years old, and the AC has never been touched - still the same gas as first filled in the factory.

If you've left the compressor off for many months (over winter, say) the seals can dry out and the gas will leak. This is why it's best to leave it in auto mode (if you have ECC) or use it once a month or so if you have the auto A/C.

It is normal for an aircon system to leak very slightly over the years. Normally a car will need regassed every 2-3 years. Cheaper to go to Kwik-fit as said. They will pressure test the system first and if it fails the pressure test, you don't pay.

the air con system is not a sealed system and leaks if not used regular ..say once a week to be shure ...if you leave it for a while it will be empty in a few months ....

Thanks for all of your replies. Looks like I probably wont get anywhere complaining to Vx Head Office then. If it packs up again soon though I will defo be writing to them. My Vectra CDX went 4 years and never lost a bit. I gather it was ok for the next 3 years n'all as my mate bought it off of me. Wish I had kept it now instead of getting the heap of French trash that I replaced it with.

I had to get mine re-gassed last week and car is a feb 2007 with 25,000 on the clock. Not too good. Kwikfit say they should be done every 2 years..
