Default hi all ! newbie sig questions

    Evenin all...

newbie, looking to buy a Signum on an 06 plate, depending what i can find. Design, or elite, for up to £6k.

I was after a reliable estate, and was looking for a mitsu lancer (reliable as hell, but ultra boring). Then whilst tootling round a car supermarket i came across a Signum Design.. loved it ! but out of my price range at £7k.

So, i'm now looking for one.. but have a couple of Q's.

    1) Roof Bars/Rack . This is important as i carry a hang glider round, so the bars have to be quite far apart. What are my options? I've read about the rails issue, which i believe they can be retro fitted at a good price? Will this enable me to space the bars out nicely?

    2) Best Engine? Petrol preferably, non turbo. I dont do the fast car or turbo thing anymore, after recently sellling my twin turbo'd jap car. What are the 2.2 Directs like? Nippy? Economical? I dont want a V6, but i would consider a diesel if they're quiet and the best engine. Any other options? is there a 2.0 n/a?

    3) Anything to look out for in reliability issues? From what i've read vauxhall is a mixed bag. Reliability is important to me, as is doing any servicing work myself, which i prefer as opposed to taking it to a dealer.

Think thats it for now !!

    Hi, Welcome to the site.

Good choice of Car. I have a Signum 2.0T Design. Its a great engine;a good balance of performance economy. Engine is very reliable and has very little issues compared to the likes of the CDTI!

Personally I'll be looking for a 2.8T Signum for my next car, if you can take as many different engines for a test drive and see what suits your needs best!

nah not doing turbos anymore.. seals, vanes, shafts going.. all extra expense to me. Plus the economy issue associated with them.. ie always on boost (too much temptation).

2.2's have fuel pump issues sometimes. Have a good long think about a 2.0t or a 120 cdti - but they sound like a tractor from outsdide. In standard form the turbos will last a while, unlike tuned motors
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Get one with the roofrails already fitted. There are three positions for the bars, one at the front, one in the normal position about the midddle and one right at the back, perfect for carrying long loads, in our case a Laser sailing dinghy!

you carry a laser on the roof? mind you, they are a bit small , just a big canoe really

Finding one with the roofrails is going to be even more difficult.. dont think i'll have that option tbh.

Are the 2.2's directs really that bad? I dont mind a bit of lack of torque, its not going to be worked hard and i dont exactly pull a trailer round the moors.. but reliability is the key here, so if its one of the worst engines i'll steer clear. Is it just the fuel pump thats the prob? and is it a few isolated cases or is it a real weak point?
Economy is also an issue, so if the directs are bad on fuel, that will also rule them out. Would 32mpg be the best combined figure?
