    Hi

Was sent this to look at mine.. (not sure why)

    Is this true?

    (ads before the main article)

basically, if your tyres are over 6 years watch out..!!!

No tyres genuinely have a lifespan as the rubber breaks down through the years

yes there is a small "box" with 4 digits in it ...i.e 4208 tyre manufactured in the 42nd week of 2009 so you can check when you buy new tyres that they ARE new tyres

averaage age of a tyre should be 5 years after this the tyre will perish and crack and could develop a buldge and cause a blowout

consider our older drivers who may only do a thousand miles a year - or less - we have a 2001 peugeot 206 that comes into our dealership - it goes to waitrose once a week and other than that to us for its yearly service
still on original tyres and has covered ...........

I already knew about the manufacture date being on tyres as I came across a online tyre company which explained all the various numbers on the tyre. It was also in quite a few newspapers over last couple of weeks. Its good that the public is made aware of it IMO.

I checked the date on my Bridgestone Potanza's that VX had fitted to the alloys on my recent new car, mainly to give me some idea when the car was actually made, and it had 1409 which meant the tyres were made in early April which isn't too bad.

However I have in the past had tyres which showed evidence of surface cracking in the rubber after only 18 months of use, but did'nt know about this dating on tyres myself until last year.

The notion that you should not 'trust' tyres that are more than 6 or 7 years old, particularly if they haven't been used (as can happen with a spare) has been around for many a year, as they age and degrade.
