    Default Air Con Edinburgh

Can anybody recommend an air con specialist in or around Edinburgh or North of Scotland? Just took the car to Kwik Fit for a re-charge as I was getting no cooling in Glasgow yesterday while it was 29 degrees outside and have been told there's no gas in the system. Kwik Fit won't re-charge if there's nothing in the system, assuming, I imagine, that it needs a repair which is beyond their expertise.

So, unless any of you guys could give me some tips on what to start looking for/checking, I'll have to put it in the hands of an expert.

Yes, try elsewhere. They should have at least done the leak test to verify whether or not the system leaks.

Air con problems! Im a refrigeration engineer who's going through similar problems with my a/c. Mines electrical so is out of my hands but 9times out of ten its gas.

Usually its one of two problems, either the condenser has sprung a leak. These are sat just in front off the rad in an ideal place to be hit by stones! Or the O ring in the compressor body has been leaking. Its usually this when you here people say they've had it topped up. Air con is a sealed system so should never need topping up, unless it leaks out some where. Which is why its good practise to run your a/c frequently to keep the O ring pressured up on both sides to stop it passing. Mines on every day and it clears your windows of condensation in seconds with it on!

You must get it leak tested under pressure, usually with dry nitrogen. Not under a vaccum as its harder to find a leak like that. Plus if its leaking on the evaporator which is a wet environment, you will draw moisture into the system. Which will freeze in the pipes as the refrigerant is at about minus 30c degrees c. Its a refigeration engineers worst nightmare to get moisture out of a fridge system, trust me.

Then all it needs is to be evacuated of all air on a vaccum pump then recharged which is the easy bit.

Get a fridge engineer to do it he will know what he's doing. Not someone who's not qualified in safe gas handling.

It needs cleaned! There could be nasty bugs in the system, You can get a cleaner which is an aerosol that you set off in the car with the air con in recirc mode. You get these from Tesco's, halford ect

Its because the evaporator produces condensate as a by product from cooling the cabin down. But doesnt produce huge amounts that would normall flush the drain line, this causes the fusty smell. The cleaner cleans the evaporator coil and drain of all the nasty bacteria that builds up.

Simplest solution is to leave it switched on.
