I was talking about first time MAX braking effort, and if you can't lock your front wheels (ie get ABS on) then I would think there is some wrong, or you have phenomenally grippy tyres.
Yup, I'd agree with that, makes sense. I know the ABS works as it comes on easily enough in snow and not quite as easily in the wet, but given the performance increase I got when I fitted the 314's I believe they are working properly. I also believe that my tyres are THAT good, which may be slightly naive but all evidence points to it.

Whatever is going on with my brake/tyre combination, I'm very happy with it and would recommend the 314mm setup to anyone who is willing to spend the money for it. Anything which improves safety can't be a bad thing IMO...

285's on that. With the 1.8 being probably the lightest, and least powerful, lump in the range those probably aren't too badly matched. However you can never have too much braking power, in reserve, for those moments that can catch us out.

But, like I said. The limit isn't braking effort, but rather the limit is road grip - as that slides first, well it would if the ABS didn't activate.

Yep, but bigger more powerful brakes in conjunction with ABS are going to give you far shorter stopping distances than with the smaller brakes though. Obviously without ABS it could be a different matter as all that could happen, if brakes not applied properly and just slammed on, is that the wheel locks up and you skid along.

As Penfold has said, I've also rarely had my ABS kick in when I've braked hard when I had my previous 314mm kit (upgraded from 302mm standard) and now the 345mm kit - so the limit of tyre grip hasn't been reached. Probably a lot to do with running decent tyres - Michelin Pilot Sport 2. It'd be a different matter with some el cheapo tyres as the ABS would probably be kicking in more often.

Probably right. I have noticed that the fronts on mine seems to be gripping more with the Avon ZV5 tyres.

Don't forget that how well your tyres grip isn't just down to tyre choice - worn shocks or bushes will lessen grip and trigger ABS earlier than usual.

Awsome roads mate and a brilliant drive if it is not busy. I had a feeling it was the Oban, Fort William area.
    3.2 v6 Signum and loving it 😁
