Red face Anybody taken their Veccy/Siggy to the Passo Della Stelvio? 'Greatest Driving road'

Heading down to Italy at the end of August with the mrs, and therefore not going to miss a chance to check out Top Gear's #Greatest driving road in the world# the Passo della stelvio..

Just wondered if anyone has already been? If you haven't heard of it then it definately needs a google! It looks immense!

I posted last year about a trip the wife and myself made in our previous Vec-C down to Venic and Rome etc. and specifically commented extensively about the Stelvio Pass. One of the most scenic trips I've ever made, and definately worth detouring slightly to experience it.

You do need to make sure however that you go at the right time of the year, as we had been in the area previously and it was closed and it was only the 1st week in October but it was snowed up and was impassable without snow chains which I obviously did not have fitted.

Top gear did a program with the 3 guys featuring 3 sports cars going over the Stelvio.
I must admit it is a sight to behold, in fact in that area there are also 2 or 3 other passes which are also worth visiting too.

Edit... Just re-read your post and noticed you had already mention Top gear... lol

Ahh that sounds brilliant! I was going to head down there late April, but as you said its weather dependant. Checked out the webcam on the stelvio website and it was snowed right under lol.

Hopefully its okay in August! Also, do you recommend Venice? Staying at Lake Garda so won't be heading down to Rome, but would be nice to tour around a bit.

If you want views then its deffinately worth a trip. If you want a good drive then be prepared for lots of cyclist and it to be generally busy.

Venice is deffinately worth a visit although personally i prefer it in Winter.

Venice is definitely worth a visit - been a couple of times now - but high Summer is not the best time. Hot, smelly and full of tourists! Mostly Americans and mostly hot and smelly! lol

Lake Garda is beautiful - we went a few years ago. Absolutely loved it. To get to Venice was easy enough, jump on the train and it's not too long a journey from memory.
