Default SRI 150 1st Gear Lag

    Hi all,

Ive had my 06 Vectra SRI 150 for about 3 months, and i find the first gear lag really annoying.

I have to rev the engine to about 1200 - 1500rpm to set off in first gear (especially when on a slight hill), else i get caught with the lag and its like driving a lawn mower.

Is this normal, or do i have a problem

I did the air filter fix a few months ago but that hasnt helped

    Cheers
    Chris

You do have a problem mate, sounds like the classic 'EGR' fault - there is a great how2 on this site on how to clean it yourself (do the boost sensor too) this should help.

Obviously it could be something more sinister like swirl valves, but more often than not its the EGR valve thats gunked up.

Not too sure you have a problem as the turbo doesn't spin up until about 1500 rpm. Unfortunately without the power of the turbo its just an old 1.9 4 pot diesel.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It's a fairly normal occurance on the 1.9's, mine does it and it can be dangerous if you're pulling out at junctions and don't quite get the revs/clutch working together properly... EGR might help but wouldn't be surprised if it didn't...

On the other hand it could be that everyone's is like that BECAUSE of the EGR valve...

I know what you are saying, mine was like this for a while till my inlet manifold totally packed up, a new inlet manifold and EGR later its totally different, picks up well from 1200rpm and below that still goes "ok", certainly more than enough to pull out of junctions with no problems at all - so maybe this is more of a "coked up" inlet issue perhaps..?

I hope its not my imagination but definitely worse then when i bought the car - its done 32k miles.

Also i dont thinkthink its as quick accelerating is what it was - i only had it serviced last week

I booked it into the garage on wed, as im a noob and wouldnt like to take things apart
i hope its nothing serious, because if the problem is by design (ie nothing wrong) then ill sell it cause its useless like it is

Definately mate, I was happy with mine before (and before the inlet went obviously) and wouldn't have touched it either.

If its as bad as you say, then there is definately something amiss - dealers tend not to diagnose EGR's - so don't be surprised if they don't.

Just spoke to a mechanic mate and he also thinks its the EGR - hes suggested taking it for a damn good thrash tonight (obviously get engine warmed up etc) to help clear it out
