    Default What engine coolant?

I've got the engine coolant warning light on at the moment.

It's been on before, and I topped up with water.

    What coolant should I use?
    Anyone recommend any?

I use the pink stuff from Vx

My old 1.8 had a slight leak from the back of the header tank, so had to top up fairly often

Should be pink VX coolant, diluted by half IIRC.

Do up the header tank cap really tight, not many people realise that there is a small overflow tube in the top rear of the tank, which can be accountable for some of that coolant loss!

It's not an overflow tube I think, and you shouldn't be losing liquid through it when the cap is merely reasonably tight. It's there so if you try and open the cap when the coolant is hot, the coolant will start to come out of the tube at the back before it starts pouring onto your hand.

With my local VX dealer I have found on 4 occasions, on 2 different Vectras, that after servicing they don't fully tighten the coolant cap, which results in the system being left unpressurised. This causes the coolant to evaporate when the engine gets hot. About 1 month after each service I found myself having to top up, and noticed the cap wasn't that tight. It wasn't until the 3rd service that I seen the pattern, and confirmed it on the 4th. On the following services, I tightened the cap immediately, and have never had a problem since. I don't know if it is deliberate or they are just being silly.

Can you buy any ready mixed coolant that is safe for the Vectra?
I'm sure I've seen some mixed coolant at Halford...

I don't want to put the wrong stuff in.

You're probably right on the function, but as swaite53 founds as well mine always loses coolant after servicing so you need to put the cap on tight, so tight that it's a swine to undo.

Just go to your dealer mate, they only sell one type. Just mix 50/50 with water and top up.

They do the pre mixed coolant at Halford, but twice the price!!!

I've seen a 1ltr pre mixed for £6.99 at Halfords, but it's only about £3.50 for a litre of neat at Vauxhall garage. You dilute 50/50 and get 2ltrs for £3.50!!

    No brainer!!

Total No Brainer. And as it stays in there for the life of the vehicle theoretically, the only choice.
