I thought log book initially, and then the database is shared by and with all insurance companies. Every time a quote is given on a registration hence car, it is updated.

when i rang my insurance with my registration num he said make model and the bhp it was, when you do a online quote and put it reg num it also comes up with make model and bhp it is.id of thought they must have good info because it affects the quote you pay.if they said your car was a 120 but the oil filler cap is on the right then it must be the 150,so you pay less insurance for a quicker car.

Which is all well and good until you have a claim. I bet there is some disclaimer that you should check details are correct and that they accept no responsiblilty for inaccuracies.

I wanted to insure a Mitsubishi 13 GLX Colt 75 bhp back in the mid 90's.

Insurance Group was a 5 and the premium in London for me was £1850.00

The car I bought was a 1.9 Turbo D 92 bhp with an insurance group of 7 and the premium was £550.00

Insurance groups mean very little as insurance companies seem to charge what they like!!

The MID (Motor Insurance Database) obtains it's information from your Insurer, however the aggregator quote engines such as compare the market etc, obtain details via DVLA. You can check your insurance is based on the correct vehicle details by logging on to www.askmid.co.uk and entering your registration number. When I first brought my Signum and was looking to obtain insurance quotes all the various sites came back showing the vehicle as a Vectra SRI. Turns out that Vauxhall had originally registered the vehicle incorrectly and had to amend the log book and advise DVLA. However on various sites it still comes up as a Vectra SRI!
