Default Keeping engine cool on hot days

Just been down to Exmouth and lands end and covered 835 miles in 5 days, and vectra ran a treat. Was very hot on the M6 coming home yesterday and hit a few traffic jams. As you are probably aware, engines don't like ticking over in traffic and getting very hot for long periods as its outside there normal operating temperature range and you can always tell when its a hot engine, well I certainly can anyway. discovered yesterday that having the aircon running, keeps the engine cool as it operates one of the radiator fans thus cooling the engine aswell as the occupants. The temperature gauge did not rise above the normal operating range at all even stood in the red hot sun on the M6 not going anywhere!

If it gets above a threshold temperature it will turn the cooling fans on anyway, so I wouldn;t worry too much.

Understand all that, but its when its gets to that threshold that I notice not a happy running motor, the aircon fan alleviates it getting to that point!

And i hope I do have a good one aswell, mines an ex repmobile with 102k on clock now, probably abused for much of its early life and still just eats up the miles when on motorway!

There are little things you can do to help as well...which I learnt back when driving jallopies. If you're in a monster traffic jam on a motorway, make sure you're in either the inside lane or outside lane, not the middle lane, so your car isn't hidden from any breeze by trucks and vans on both sides of you, and leave a good few feet between your car and the one in front of you, to allow more breeze to reach the rad and also so his exhaust fumes aren't coming straight at the front of your car.

Exactly. If anything, running the A/C will mean additional heat has to be dissipated by the condensor!

It prpbably doesn't like the massive drain on the electrics from all those fans running.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
