Car event cruises to a success
Jun 3 2009 by Shona Mitchell, East Kilbride News
HUNDREDS of car enthusiasts descended on the town centre last week for the second EK Cruise of the year.
As many as 200 cars and up to 600 people attended the event in the Sainsbury’s car park where drivers were able to show off their modified cars to other enthusiasts.
Many companies who deal in car-related services, such as audio systems, also went along with demo cars to showcase their latest products.
Those attending the event travelled from all over Scotland, with some saying they had come from as far afield as Aberdeen.
The event was also covered by some top car magazines following the success of the last EK Cruise which saw it rated the best cruise in Scotland and second best in the UK by FastCar magazine.
The event is organised by 18-year-old Mark Grimley from Clarkston and three other car enthusiasts.
Mark, a banking advisor, told the News this week: “The EK Cruise has been going for over three years now and each time it’s held it just gets bigger and better.
“We hold an event roughly every three months so this was the second one of 2009.
“We have recently started working with the shopping centre management and the local police to make sure that the events work better for everyone. We don’t want to inconvenience shoppers.”
He added: “The hope is that with the management and police on board we can expand the cruise and make it more of a family event. We did have some families and people of all ages there this time but want to attract more in the future.
“The hope is that we may even be able to set up stalls and make it a community event.
“The centre management have been good with us so far by putting on extra stewards and opening up toilets for us in the centre.”
Andy Bradley, centre director at East Kilbride Shopping Centre, said: "The safety and security of our customers is of paramount importance. We found out about the gathering very late on and worked with the organisers to minimise disruption.
"The rally has grown considerably over the past few years and this clearly raises a number of issues for residents living in the area and visitors to the centre.
“In light of this we will be working closely with the organisers and the police over the coming weeks to try and find a solution that is acceptable to all parties."
A spokeswoman for East Kilbride Police confirmed that they were aware of the event in advance and had organised extra resources to cover the town centre area that evening. There were no reports of any trouble.
