confused Can BMW do what Vauxhall couldn't...?

Vauxhall tried to fill a gap in the market wheich blatantly didn't exist when they designed the Signum, that much has been clear for years. Luckily we of the Forum know what a brilliant bargain they are and how uniqe and useful they can be, but for most of the country they're jsut an oddity which no-one understands...

So why have BMW now decided to try their hands at it...?

As far as I can tell, it's a Signum through and through...

Dont like that one, not very nice at all. Just have to see, as I am sure it will do well as it is a BMW & people like anything BMW.

Starting at £40K. And if I know BMW then that will be nearer £50K by the time you've added the options that will make this remotely liveable with. Still, if people pay their hard earned money to buy cars like the Cayenne then it will probably make money.

The reason why the Signum failed is because it sat in no mans land between car segments.
It wanted to be an executive transport, but executives wouldn't want to get out of a Vauxhall at the golf course etc (don't shoot me, just stating the facts)?

Because that has a BMW badge on the front and rear, it will be more accepted than a VX equivalent. That's it, nothing more to say.

I feel that in purely commercial terms, the Signum was a mistake which VX/Opel will not repeat as they will concentrate, whoever owns them, on offerings which will sell in sufficiently large quantities. I remember GM being quoted as saying that 'if you want a GM luxury saloon in Europe, get a Saab', so the Omega wasn't and will never be replaced, not least because in the UK there is a very limited market for Vauxhall-badged saloons, as the majority of buyers want a 'more practical' hatchback.

Since owning Vectras, I would in the future certainly continue to seek out well-priced larger-power-engined cars (i.e. greater than 1.8 naturally aspirated displacement, which would include 1.4 and 1.6 turbocharged petrols) which have been prey to savage depreciation and therefore affordable.......for as long as they are available.

As for BMW, they can justify selling anything with a BMW badge....but they have cleverly entered the same market segment as the Vectra with their 1 series, and managed to outdo the opposition in terms of emissions and fuel economy.....but I simply don't like the look of them.

I think those two posts sum it up completely - doesn't bother me as I enjoyed the fact that everytime someone new got in my Signum (when I had it) they asked what it was, and were suitably impressed with it as a passanger...

Whatever mistakes Vauxhall made when making it (as regards the market for it) I can't thank them enough...

Likewise. My first foray into Vectras was a 1.8 saloon Vectra 'C' with extras (an Active) for £11K with 7 miles on the clock £4K below list. Enough said. And I got 7K trade-in after 2 years to get my current car. Or to put it another way let the badge-snobs take their pick, I'll go for the heavily discounted even more attractive (to me) alternatives.

Nothing about that would tempt me out the 5 series (which is a superb car).
Can't even work out what they are trying to achieve with that thing - sort of reminds me of one of the volvos from a few years ago - X90 or something. Such an awkward looking mutation.
No idea why anyone would buy that instead of the 5. If you want "commanding driving position", buy a van.

The other good thing about them is that should you decide to mod it in some way, you'll almost certainly end up with a unique car - there's so few of them on the road of the various trim level/engine combinations that you'd be very unfortunate to come across another one with the same mods... Signumboy and Maverick are classic examples...

The 1 series is much much smaller than the vectra/mondeo class, just look at the boot space. Surly you mean 3 series?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
